I was at the CineGear Expo in Los Angeles on Saturday and saw some amazing cameras. This is where the big boys play with the big toys! The show stopper was the new Sony F23 digital cinema camera. This camera is a deal at $100,000. My little HV20 looked like a kids toy next to some of these cameras. Check out the clip I shot below.

Nice clip! The HV20 shines yet again. That was not an ideal shooting day with all the bright sunlight, but the shots are great.

I drooled a little.

But - I spent yesterday and today building my own crane and dolly (around $120 total) and am pretty happy being lower-tech. For now.

I would say those cameras might be 10-15% in image quality but that is it. I can see spending more then a few thousand dollars on a camera. 100K that is crazy!

Let see some photos of that crane and dolly!

I used the book "Killer Camera Rigs You Can Build".

I'll be busting out the crane/dolly for a short next weekend. I'll try to remember to get some pics then... for now it's apart in my shed.

15%? how nice of you to estimate something you don't understand not even 15%.

Do you understand it Mik? I think 15% is a fair number. Lets see a Sony F23 records in HD1080/60P and HD RGB 4:4:4 mode, the camera supports 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 1080/23.98PsF, 24PsF, 25PsF, 29.97PsF, 50P, 59.94P, 1080/50i, and 59.94i. It has three 2.2 megabit 2/3-inch progressive CCD imagers and 14-bit A/D conversion. It supports for multi-frame rate and SR motion, with 4:2:2 Capture at up to 60 fps and 4:4:4 Capture at up to 30 fps.

All of these specs are just subjective to the person looking at the final image anyway. All I was trying to say is that a $100,000 camera is only marginally better then an HV20 in final image quality.

But you are right Mik I don't understand it??

you are very funny. very.

edit: sony always adds to the right price, 100k probably is worth 85-90k.. who knows. but still, the idea is the same.
