When I was researching different encoding methods for YouTube I found THIS (http://youtube.com/watch?v=MAFORL4qDWw) which I think is the sharpest YouTube encoding I've ever seen. But the site where it was done is all in Japanese. Is there any way to tell how they encoded this?

Looks like he output it as an flv beforehand:

Same settings, except the res he used for that one was the full HDV 1440x1080, and the datarate was 2400 kbs.

Ooh, exciting. Looks like someone fooled the YouTube Encoder pretty well.

Letīs see if I can replicate this trick by feeding a FLV to YouTube. But I think there may be more to it.

Nah - I tried to encode a HDV-clip with Sorensen Squeeze and upload it to YouTube, but the processed video was converted to 320x240 again. There is another trick involved.
The machine translation doesnīt explain so much. A fried of mine speaks japanese, if heīs online later this day Iīll ask him to have a look at it. He has no idea about video editing, though. ^^

I noticed that buffering can't keep up with the video stream but hey, what a hell of a feat to put this resolution up on YouTube. You just pause it until it buffers most of it to your hard drive and than play it. Even full screen look terrific.

Yes, I noticed that too - that the buffering can't keep up. That seemed weird because I assumed that when YouTube munges uploaded files they adjust the bandwidth (bitrate) as well as the resolution and file format. It's almost like the guys who made that clip snuck something past YouTube.
(it looks like it might be a cool movie, too) :hv20-smilie72:
Still the question on the table is: How did they do it and how can we do the same thing? :hv20-smilie84:

As you can see in the analysis it is actually an HDV-resolution FLV that is played in the YouTube window - the uploader somehow got past customs and the video was just passed through.

Yeah, it doesn't work anymore, though:
