Was curious is anyone is using a tapeless workflow? Anyone using a Firestore - http://www.focusinfo.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=3 - or something similar?

I think all camera with firewire is compatible.

It's pricey and seems a pretty good solution. However, I did a lot of weddings. Just can't imagine if there's a harddrive failure at the end of the wedding day, I lost all the footage. I can't afford that either.

WEll you can set it up to record to tape as well as HD. The beauty is in the editing as it transfers files to the computer in 1/4 real time. Capturing video is so last year. :)

Guess 99 and 9 tenths percent of us are "So Last Year" at least for next year.

I have been living in the "last year" for many years. If you are using HDV, I'm sure you are one of us :)

Prefer true HD on my HVX and have been thinking about getting a Firestore, just was wondering if they were compatible with both cameras before i drop the cash.

I use the Firestore FS-4Pro HD. Because I use Final Cut Pro, l record in QuickTime (not m2t). I use Compressor to covert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec. That takes an 8-minute, 1.86 gig HDV file and coverts it to a 6.39 gig AIC HD in just under 21 minutes (Mac Mini, 1.6ghz Intel core Duo, 2 gig Sdram). I then use FCP / Cinema Tools to reverse telecine the file, which takes another 14 minutes and brings the file size back down to 4.78gig.

The best thing about it is, not having to change tapes every hour. Last night I set her up in the corner and let her roll. We spent the next four-hours doing a little bluegrass jamming, mostly to songs I never even heard before. I checked that the Firestore was recording during the breaks, but by the end of the night, most had forgot the camera was even there.

Since it would take an hour just to transfer the 23 files, over 40gigs of data, to my working firewire hard drive; I save that time by having Compressor transfer the files, as it converts them.

Sadly, after all this effort, I am really only able to watch the results in DivX HD at 720p through my Buffalo Linktheater.

I use the Firestore FS-4Pro HD...

Too bad there isn't something truly portable like this that has an HDMI interface and enough speed to record the native output of the HV20. Can you imagine?

Of course something like THIS (http://www.proaudiosolutions.com/product-p/magmacb1h.htm) would let you use a blackmagic card with a laptop.. might be a better solution. But the cost is a little on the high-side for my taste.

Couldn't you record directly without getting that humming noise?

So, does anyone use a Firestore with their HV20 and care to comment? I'm seriously considering getting one. Will it help with transfers? I'm so impatient when it comes to transferring the video in real time to my computer. Will the DTE speed up the transfers?

See my comments above. Any other questions?

I know I'm three years late, but if frede is still around please answer this:

How are you getting tapeless recording to work on the HV20? It can record just fine when it records to tape simultaneously, but if not, the camera turns off after 5mins (or can you take that off?)

* quote removed *

On most of these little cameras, open the tape door and the camera will stay on forever! :hv20-smilie77:

I was looking at the specs on the focus website, and it said that you can record in a few different types of 24p. (QT 24p, AVI 24p, etc.)

Do you think that if you set your HVxx to 24p (in 60i wrapper) and the FS to whichever 24p mode, would it be true 24p? This could be great for filmmakers using 24p, because you could have almost instant footage transfered, as opposed to RT, automatically saved as true 24p (unsure, but its possible), and no time needed to IVTC your 24p/60i wrapper footage.

The Firestore just records the HDV stream your camera sends, so with the HV20, that's 24p in a 60i wrapper. Of course I'd love to be proved wrong here! I'm not sure what it would do with the HV40?
