Also, I think I gave incorrect procedural tips before. When I put the clip into Vegas, I had to set it to "Smart Resampling," not "Disable Resampling"

Yes, use smart resample in Vegas to smoothen the slow motion.

At the end, where the guys throws the golf ball at the camera, and the cam shifts to avoid it, are my eyes deceiving me, or did I see a little bit of wobble (rolling shutter) there?

What settings was the camera using?

Yes, I do believe that weird effect is the ERS issue. I was in shutter prio mode at 1/2000.

right click in timeline and go to Speed/Duration. it's not as flexible as in Vegas (you can't keyframe it, you set it once for the whole clip).
and yes it's a bit of wobble at the end, 1/2000 it's a too much for that fast movement.

I have been doing slow motion in Premiere this way. I thought there are some new tricks to make use of the 60i to make nicer slow-mo. Thanks for your response.

nope, not without a plugin.
if you use other platforms such as combustion there are more options for time remapping.
as far as plugins go twixtor rules that effect.

Do you find the rolling shutter wobble is lessened by shooting with a slower shutter speed (e.g., 1/48 instead of 1/2000)? Why did you have such a high shutter speed for this shot?

Well, my footage (http://hv20.info/yopu/NoWobbles.m2t)seemed ok, . I was running down stairs to test the camera. There is a little, but I had to look hard to see it.

Original settings are superimposed on the clip. (1080-50i, OIS on, TV 50, auto exposure). This clip is 720p, with slomo applies in Vegas 7e.

I wanted the golf ball to be as crisp as possible.

there is wobble on the stairs video, very visible in slowmotion. however at full speed the eye doesn't catch it, or not at first view anyway.

the ois on and the hand shakes pushing the cmos to it's limit makes the wobble. it might look better with the ois off and worse at higher shutter speeds.

kbrafford: your intention was right, the ball is very sharp, i like it. don't move the camera at so high shutter speeds

I think people are saying 1/1000th is about right for good slo motion out of the HV20 (though it does depend on your application). Need to try some of that myself.

I couldn't see the wobble at all at full motion, which is why I slowed it down as much as possible in Vegas. Then I could see it.

I also tried with OIS off and it did look better.

I wanted to see how bad the wobble would be for the sort of use I will get out of the camera - chasing my boys around the house and garden - and was surprised at how little wobble there was. I had to look very hard to see it.

I doubt that I'll ever be using such a high shutter speed like the OP, but never say never!

Actually, I can see there will be times when the rolling shutter could be useful - like special effects in dream sequences...

One thing that has struck me is how much worse the wobble looks when the video is resized. From 1080 to 720 makes it noticeably worse to my eyes.

i guess there's nothing you can do this year. all cmos cameras have the rolling shutter issue more or less. from all footage i've seen my personal view is that sony's has less wobble, almost not visible in slow (2007 camcorders like "7" series) but hv20's cmos is better in other aspects so it's a trade-off image quality/cmos speed. too bad canon doesn't offer technical detalis regarding cmos but sony say they save 4 elements at a time, 4x faster than standard cmos. but there is no doubt to me canon would not improve it's cmos if it doesn't already use faster than standard cmos and don't say it. today i'd get the hv and worry about shutter than loose it's very nice images to a faster cmos.

I think perfect slowmotion form 60i or 50i fottage is impossible in Premiere Pro, as the program does not seperate the fields when a clip is slowed down. At least it does not render perfectly for me... I use After Effect to create perfect slowmo from 50i in a 25p project, since AE seperates interlaced fields correctly...

That's pretty funny. I can see the thought process there as he was throwing the ball up and down, and he was laughing about throwing the ball at you before he even did it. He definitely didn't have his poker face on. :)
