Hi, I am a newbie in the video field and have 2 questions about archiving the video clips.
1. Is it best to store the original DV tape ? Or is it better to burn all the clips that captured into the computer into DVD-ROM ?
2. If I store the original HDV tape with HDV 1080 video clips, and I am so unfortunate that my HDV camcorder has broken down some day, can I buy another cheaper DV camcorder without the HDV format and capture the original HDV clips into computer ??
Appreciate your reply.:hv20-smilie03:

1. I would say that the tape is the cheapest solution to back up, but I would recomend an external Hard Drive as well. I would not bakc up to DVD-rom
2. You will need to buy another HDV camcorder to extract the footage because a regular DV cam will not be able to read the HDV footage. Many people with more expensive HDV cams are buying the HV20 as a tape reader for their footage. If it were true that a regular DV cam could read an HDV tape then I am sure they would be buying a $200 dv cam instead of the HV20.

I use the double back up of the tape and hard drive and would definitely recommend it as well.

I am sorry, how do you double back up the tape?
Means you copy the tape into another HV20?

Once I get my HV20 next week, I will test this, but I see no reason that you should not be able to use a cheap camcorder for capture, but then again, I might be wrong. When capturing you are just transferring bits and bytes off the tape, I don't see why the bits and the bytes would not be read and transferred using a DV camcorder unless the storage format is very different. I'd be surprised if it was, but I guess I will find out next week :hv20-smilie03:

I'll explain further why it won't work: (These are examples taken from another discussion board.)
It is like asking why a betamax machine can't play back a digi beta tape. Just because the tape is the same size doesn't mean anything.
The deck is not just a dumb device sending ones and zeroes. For example, it has to be able to read the signal to do things like error correction and recognize TC data. It's like if you gave me a German newspaper and asked me to read it to you over the phone. Yeah, it's just printed letters on a page, but those letters are arranged in a language that I don't speak.

Sorry, all I meant was that I store the original DV tape and then also transfer and save the footage to a hard drive.

Thank you very much everybody for answering my questions.
I am very interested and look forward to "terjeber" testing whether a tape recorded by HV20 can be read by a dirt cheap DV cam.
