View Full Version : HV20.com will be down for UPGRADE...

Mal
2008 February 21st, 18:43
I'll be attempting a major upgrade to our software to a new version.

It should allow many new features, INCLUDING full email integration (you can send and receive posts via email).

I'm guessing it will take about one hour to install, and then up to 8 hours to fix it after it breaks.
Seriously, it could take a while.

Since I am on EST time, I might attempt it tomorrow morning, or Saturday morning. We'll see...

I'll let the forum know in this thread an hour before I start the upgrade...

By the way, we will have to condense the amount of individual forums we have.
There's about 20 sub-forums right now, and I will be trying to get that down to 12 or so.
I know this might be confusing at first, but it will make things a lot easier, especially for email integration.
Most new members post in 'HV20/HV30 Camcorder Information' anyway! :)

unlike other forums, where i enjoy only certain areas, here i like posting in all of them, so most of the time, i don't even use categories at all... i just use the "New Posts" button.

Has there been any thought about splitting this forum into separate forums for Vegas, Ulead, etc.? I, for one, would find it easier to use if it was. Anyone else?

Good luck.

nah... there aren't THAT much of posts per cat. lots of threads would be lost of sight, since "Vegas" cat would only be appealing to a very little portion of the users (same with Premiere, Ulead, etc.)

It's exactly the OPPOSITE I want to do, reduce the amount of sub-forums, not increase them.
I know how it can be appealing to have each theme have its own forum, but it makes it a nightmare to moderate, as moderators spend a good deal of their time moving posts around into the correct category.

Any chance you could adjust the vBulletin settings to accomodate 2 character searches like http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/ does? The quote below is from Chris Hurd when I asked him what his settings were.

vB Admin Control Panel > vBulletin Options > Message
Searching Options > Search Index Minimum Word Length

Two characters creates an abnormally large database
but it's crucial for our particular market, for example 3D

Hope this helps -- CH

I know it's possible to create a list for terms that can manually be added to be included in the search words. Maybe something like this could be handier then enabling indexing for all the 2 char words. :-)

It is a simple setting, HOWEVER, EXTREMELY database access intensive, so I might revert back to 3 characters again, if it becomes bogged down.

It's a VERY new thing, and in fact I am surprised it is even working as good as it is, considering I am still getting database errors here.

I'll try and resolve all the issues one at a time, but it will take a bit of a messy few days until we get them all squared away.

I know email integration isn't all too important for some, but it's ESSENTIAL for others.

The good thing is it can be turned off by the individual, so it's just a matter of trimming the reply appropriately; although that also applies to forum replies, not only email replies.

Using Firefox 1.5.0.12 on Mac (of course), I didn't see any problem with the old avatar. It fit in the left frame fine there.
Maybe you're mobile thingamajig tries to show the images at their full size?
The parameters for the avatars are that it should be less than 150 by 150 pixels or 195.3 KB in file size.
Though my image was larger than the 150x, it is less than the file size limit.

If this presents a problem here, it could be that others that also follow the guidelines may have their avatars creating issues on other people's dujamufliggers. ;-)

What do you mean with the SUBJECT is lengthy?

The part within the [] is so the script knows where to place the post.

Mal

Taky,
the reason vpq's avatar might of been big, is because he also is a admin, and as such has a MUCH bigger option for those kinds of things; avatars, maximum attachment size, maximum picture suize, etc., etc,.

Mal
2008 February 24th, 17:52
"RE: [Forum Announcements-t-7392] HV20.com will be down for UPGRADE..."

Okay yes,
that's the reason why: the script needs to know where the email came from (which forum), and needs to know where to send the reply (forum and thread).
Can't do anything about that, I'm afraid.

Another thing I'm noticing (not sure if it was going on before), replies at the website are butted up against the post it is in response to instead of at the bottom. Makes it very hard to see who may have replied to what when, once the thread starts getting long, and longer. Having the new posts always come in at the bottom does mean that there will always have to be qoted text from the post being replied to in order for anyone to be able to follow the conversation.

But to me, that's far better than having to scroll up and down 50 posts to see if anything new has been said about something that happened 20 posts back.

Any thoughts?

PS: I tried to reply via email. I typed in the box at the top (like you said). But when I hit the "Return" key the new lines don't have the " > " anymore. I left them out to see what would happen (should others do the same thing). Like those other posts that didn't go through because I "bottom posted", it seems this one didn't make it either.

That may be a problem for people replying if they have to manually add a new > and a space at the beginning of every new line they type.

OK. that worked this time.
But the way this works, it doesn't allow for including the quoted text since the system only reads what's in between the provided lines on the reply page.

One would have to know that they must copy/paste what they want to quote, and then indicate in some way that it is, in fact, quoted text.

Most people aren't going to do all that - if they bother working out the whole "quote" thing in the first place.

Just my observation.

Forums seem to be quite well balanced now, despite my reluctance yesterday to amalgamate audio/lighting & accessories: every forum has at least a few visitors now at any given time - sweet.

"RE: [Forum Announcements-t-7392] HV20.com will be down for UPGRADE..."

We might be able to do something about that after all.
The programmer of the plugin (Cyricx) may release an option to rename the forums for the purpose of email subject shortening.

How about just get rid of the word "Announcements" ?

Mal

http://www.hv20.com/

All those will need to be shortened/renamed, not just the "Forum Announcements" one, and just dropping Announcements will make it "Forum"; not very descriptive.

I'd opt to preface everything with HV20, and then: News, or make them all HV20 Forum:

i.e.:
Forum Announcements to:
HV20 News

Questions, problems & observations to:
HV20 Ask

HV20/HV30 Camcorder Information to:
HV20 Info

HV20/HV30 24p workflow to:
HV20 24p

etc, etc.

That way it is easy for anyone to put in a filter in their email client, should they want to categorize emails coming from our forum.

those social networking profiles remind me of Invision. They also did something like that. Great idea, although they don't usually work as expected... wonder why, since i like the idea a lot. maybe the "social nwtworking" term has to be promoted more on the desired forum... well, just speaking from what i've seen on different ipb's. let's see how all works here.

by the way, i was at the beach while the whole upgrade went on.. except for those 2 minutes: i was getting updated with reading all the missed posts, and just when i was about to get into this one, it got shut down hehe

good job! just one question... have you thought on trying some other vB look/style/theme??? or just like it as it is?? if you wish, i'd be glad to try create something! (2 years of architecture + designer gf might help, i hope).

That would be great... may be a theme based on the camera, something like this:

hey that looks great!

Mal

Sure!

I'd not want it to look to 'flashy', so a simple, clean look would be nice (hence the way it looks now). There's also the consideration of upgrading the software, and how that interferes with templates. I deliberately did little to the templates, in order to preserve easy upgradability, and plug-in integration.

If anyone wants to have a go at it, go for it.

Ivan you wanna try; I can give you access to that side of things, and you can create a third template based on this one (we currently use two different ones).

Mal
2008 February 28th, 15:53
Terrible, that's great!
Maybe you can work with Ivan on it?

Let me know...

I was just making a suggestion to Ivan :)

But it's ok, If Ivan makes the template I can make the graphic buttons.

Just let me know which ones do you need.

BTW, you can use that header already.

I have a question about the 'Last edited' link feature.
Is it only me, or I'm the only one that has that link?
I notice that other people does not have a link when they edit their post.

Is it only viewable by the user who posted the post?

Mal

Not sure; I can see them all, but I might be able to as admin.
