UPDATE: It's been a while since I posted this, so it may be in need of some updates. I just added something to the XLR adapter list. If you see anything else to add or update, please post at the bottom with a request to UPDATE. Thanks.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE:

I was making a list for myself of the essentials, near-essentials and the luxury items. I figured I'd post this for others' benefit.

Obviously, just a start with many holes, but it is a working structure in one thread.

If people modify and add to the list, I'd be happy to edit the top post with those updates. Specific brands, suggestions for categories, etc., etc.

The SD card would be on our "essentials" list. We picked one up specifically so we could preview actual shutter/aperture values when in Cinema mode. If you partially depress the photo shot button without the SD card in, it just returns a no-card error. To my mind, the first thing you need to buy :-)

Also, if you standardize on 72mm filters, you'll be able to use them not only the HV20, but also on 35mm lenses, and larger cams. You'd just need corresponding step up rings for each application.

for the xlr adapter, go for one with phantom power. a whole range of quality mics are possible then.

I know that a good condensor mic has a wonderful range for capturing music but don't most of them want to see about 40 volts of phantom power. How is the Beachtek come up with this power when your in the field. I have a condensor mic with a built in place for a 9 volt battery but I didn't feel it was nearly as good as when it was given phantom power via XLR.

I'm on the lookout now for a good portable phantom power source for my XLR condensor mic. I think I was Googling around a while back and I found some that were quite expensive. As I remember upwards of around $200.

Any recommendations on if I was able to supply phantom what might be a good condensor mic to by for under $200 to $300. It would always be used to capture accoustic string music and for a great deal of the time, placed in front of a loud speaker farm at a concert but also sometimes directly in a circle of musicians jamming. Any suggestions would be appreciated as well as a good method for supplying portable phantom power.

60 Watt Hours for $99!! DOH! Thats more than 10+ hours for the HV20!
To answer your question. Why yes you can.

130 Watt Hours for $199!! Doh DOH! Batty juice that lasts for days!!
http://www.batterygeek.net/BG_9_12_130_Portable_DVD_Player_Battery_p/9-12-130_batterygeek.htm

I run my Tekkeon at 7.5V not 9V though. But I did test to see if it ran on 9V and it does just fine.

EDIT: Too bad, Batterygeek doesn't sell and ship to my country :( :(

I'm just wondering if these kind of batteries could damage HV20? Also, IRBSurfer, how long your Tekkeon lasts with HV20? Which model is yours, 3300 or 3400? TIA

I cant honestyly say because I havent been able to run it long enough. I have used it to power the camera for 7 hours straight and it took off a little more than half its juice.

Canon HV30 (Pal) - From Amazon.co.uk - £699.99

Rode NTG2 shotgun microphone - From Amazon/Absolute Music Solutions - £129.99

Rode SM3 Suspension Shockmount - From Amazon/Absolute Music Solutions - £22.95

I want to get a XLR to 3.5mm audio adapter for the NTG2, is it a XLR (FEMALE) to 3.5mm (MALE) adapter right? On the NTG2 descrption it says "output is a standard 3-pin XLR male connector.".

Also want to get a lens hood, thinking about the Fotodiox 43mm lens hood but I'm not sure if I need a UV filter to be able to attach the hood to the camera as I've been hearing.

I'm still debating over HV30 (£699) and HV20 (£544.59). Thats a £150 diffrence. Maybe I could get the HV20 and spend the money saved on a Beachtek, Wide Angle or even a Baby Death FishEye lens.

But I'm considering getting a Beachtek, Wide Angle and Tripod when I'm over in the states working on a summer camp teaching digital filmmaking becuase it's cheaper over there.

What do you guys think of the shopping list, any thing else I've missed?

I am new at this but after hours and hours of reading here until about midnight when I had to wake up at 4am for work, I was so punchy I just went ahead and ordered a bunch of stuff even though I planned on just playing with the camera for a while first.

Kingston KISDM4GBQ 4GB High Capacity MiniSDHC Card - Class 4

Lowepro LOE140B Edit 140 Camera Shoulder Bag

Canon CAWDH43 WD-H43 43mm 0.7x Wide Angle Converter Lens - for the HV20

Velbon VEDV7000 DV-7000 Tripod with 2-Way Fluid Head

B+W BWUVMC43 43mm UV Haze 010 (MRC) Multi-Resistant Coating Glass Filter

Giottos GILCK Lens Cleaning Kit with Small Rocket Air Blower

From Bestbatt.

I just bought a Canon HV30 and I need to start looking at accessories!

First off, I need an external mic, xlr adapter, AND a bag.

Suggestions?

I'm looking at the Canon DM50 for an external mic, either the Beachtek dxa-2s or dxa-6, but I have NO idea what to get for a bag. I want a bag that can hold all my accessories and possibly a few more digital cameras and cords. Thank you!

Any other accessories I should be looking at? I'm looking to do some news parody reels/interviews. I also need do film a short PSA documentary... just so you have an idea of what I'll need.

Oh, any suggestions for lapel mics? Should I go corded or wireless?

If you do a search there are extensive threads on the subject of external mics. After reading them several months ago after I bought my HV20 I ordered the Rode Videomic and have been happy with it. There are quite a few choices out there depending on your budget and needs. Sennehiser just came out with a very small one for mini cams like the HV20. Avoid the cheap Sima mic at all cost!!!

OK, I have ordered my HV20. Now, I need to get my essentials. Below is a list of what I have gathered I need. If anyone has any insight on changes, please let me know.

*First major use is daughter's first trip to Disney World in 2 weeks

Purchased
1. Extra battery: http://www.bestbatt.com/Canon_BP_2L18_Battery_p/bbbp2l1801.htm
2. Charger: http://www.bestbatt.com/Canon_CB_2LT_CB_2LW_Equivalent_Battery_Charger_p/bbcb2lt02.htm
3. Filters: Decided on a 43mm to 52mm stepup. Got the Hoya Super HMC UV and the Super HMC Circular Polarizer.
2. MiniDV: Ordered 10 Panasonic PQ63's

If anyone has any recommendations or changes, it is greatly appreciated, especially on the filters. I have a very good case for carrying it, so I do not need that. At this time, much more than this will be out of my price range for a little while.

AdTHANKSvance!!!

In the spirit of filling gaps in your shopping list, a Firewire cable comes second only to tapes. I want to begin using the camera, so I need tapes. I want to begin editing and viewing the shots I took, so I need a Firewire cable.

What about a playback deck for my computer? In my search for the camera, I came across many eBay descriptions proclaiming their used camera was "never used as a playback deck". Is there a playback deck I can connect to my computer other than just using my camera? Is using my camera to move files to my computer such a bad thing?

Dana,
My only camcorder (very old Mini DV JVC) is broken. Hence, I just purchased a Canon HV30 (haven't received it yet), but in order to play any of my clients or my own older DV tapes into my PC for editing or archiving, I had the same questions. I also heard about mixing tape brands & lubricants. So I decided to reserve my HV30 for only the Panasonic tapes I ordered.
For playing back those other tapes I figured that any DV camcorder with a firewire port would surfice. I went out and ordered a very inexpensive Canon ZR800 (<$150/New). I don't know how the playback will be affected by a cheap camcorder. After all it's not using the CCDs or the CMOS chips or any of the capture technology. I hoping the playback over firewire is adequate for my needs.
I hope others will offer their opinions. I'd like to know if I screwed up or not.
