Howdy Folks,

I am new to the world of real video. I previously had an el cheapo video cam, and was not very pleased with the quality of video I was getting. I just picked up a HV20 after severely confusing myself reading about the different features and such of the cameras in this price range.

If you haven't already noticed I am an avid bowhunter and plan to use this camera primarily to capture hunting footage. I will also be using it for the normal holidays, family vacation, and kiddos sporting events.

This forum looks to hold quite a bit of information about the HV20 and other aspects of Video . I will have several questions as I move along the learning curve and hope I can count on this forum for help. Unfortunately I probably wont be able to offer any useful information for a while. I ask for your patience with my lack of video knowledge, however if you have a question about Auto Repair I may be able to help you with that.

Thanks for having me, Curtis

Hi Curtis, and welcome to the forum!

Personally, I haven't yet been able to find a camera as compact as the HV20 that I like any better: you can leave everything in full AUTO mode, control (almost) every function manually or just about any combination of the two you can think of, and if used well it makes really beautiful pictures, well above its "weight class."

It has some compromised ergonomics (how did Canon manage to design a hand-grip that is equally awkward for people with large hands or small?), the included battery doesn't last long enough and the built-in microphone is a let-down even by palm-corder standards, but most of the worst limitations have inexpensive work-arounds well documented here in the annals of HV20.com.

If you have a newer HDTV set, be sure to pick up an HDMI cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240): once you see your footage in HD, you'll be hooked ...
