Hi everyone. :hv20-smilie24: I've been lurking for a few days, lots of useful info to be had:hv20-smilie03:

I just ordered a V20 that will arrive on Monday. As soon as I get my new computer system set up I will take on the task of importing old Hi8 and Digital footage onto harddrives.

I'm not exactly clear on what hardware I'll need to import the old footage.

I know I'll need the old Canon ES5000 Hi8 camcorder hooked up to the new HV20. My understanding is that I can just pull the video through without having to first dub it onto Mini DV?

As for the Mini DV tapes captured with my Canon Optura Pi, can I just drop the Hi8 tapes into the HV20 and import them directly, or will I need to connect the Optura Pi w/Hi8 tape and pull through?

Sorry for the dumb question, just trying to figure out how many camcorders will be needed.

Welcome!

Its not a dumb question at all. I have captured several Hi-8 tapes into my computer using the HV20. You will need the Hi-8 camcorder, and the HV20 of course. You will need a firewire cable to go from the HV20 into your computer, and the A/V input cable that comes with your HV20.

You do not need to record anything onto the HV20, it only acts as a converter to convert the video to digital. It records through the HV20 and onto the computer.

Then just follow the instructions in the manual. The manual can be a bit cryptic, but if I can figure it out, anyone can. There is a page that tells how to hook up the cables (not hard) and a page to tell you the settings for the HV20.

Regarding the Optura Pi, being that it is MiniDV (not Hi-8), you should be able to just insert the tape into the HV20 and capture as normal.

If you have any problems, post your problem and I'm sure that we can help.

Have fun.....

You can ALSO transfer Hi-8 video to HV20 to store to DV tapes without using a computer. Just connect the AV out from the Hi8 cam to the AV port of Hv20.
