Just wonderig what options there are for recording audio externally. Would something like this or the Marantz work well?

Yes, that's a neat little unit (from what I read, never used it myself).
I ended up replacing my Marantz PMD660 with a Korg MR1 (about double the cost of the MicroTrack; not sure if it's twice as good though! :))
Rikki, check this out; it's a listing from B&H that shows some units, ordered from LOW to HIGH price:

Just google some you think you like, and check their reviews, etc.

Does anyone use an iPod with one of the microphone attachments?

I use an iPod nano with an Xtrememac MicroMemo nano recorder. It's a nice combination for a standalone recorder. You can use the attached flexible stem mic, or swap it out for a lapel mic, or even use line-in for recording.
If anyone is interested, I have some notes about the configuration, along with some tips for using the combo.
