So lets say I shot a project in HDV and I think it looks great in the 16 x9 aspect ratio and I just found it is going to be shown on Standard 4x3 screen. I don't want to export the video out and have it be squished in and forced into a 4x3 but rather just keep it 16x9 and show the bars on the top and bottom. How would you export the 16x9 footage into a 4x3 video without squishing the sides? Any ideas? OH and using FINAL CUT PRO...

The black bars on top and bottom is referred as "letterbox".

I would export as Widescreen DV which uses the entire 4:3 frame but flags the file as anamorphic. Or if you are rendering for DVD, export using a high quality intermediate format using the full 4:3 frame (720x480) and set the DVD flag to anamorphic.
