View Full Version : slowing down 50i/60i footage

I don't understand how 60i (50i in Pal) works. I've seen many posts here talking about slowing down footage, in which the 50i mode supposed to be much better for because of the blending of the fields.
I shot some footage in 25p, and some in 50i. When I capture them in Vegas, it automatically takes them in at 25fps. the problem is that I don't see any difference in frame rate or smoothness between 25p and 60i footage when I set the playback speed to 50%.
Can anybody please explain how to capture 50i/60i footage and then slow it down smoothly?

No...the discussions we were having (at least on my thread) were about slowing down 60i footage using *interpolation*, not using 50i footage using *blending*.
What I did on my footage was to import 60i video and set up a project for 960x540 (1/2 of the vertical resolution of the 1080i sensor), progressive, with interpolation. For the 60i media, I told Vegas to disable resampling and to playback at a .500 rate.
When you do those things in Vegas and render a 29.97fps progressive project, you get really cool slomo. Just mind the vertical detail, though :hv20-smilie03:

In television, the picture (in PAL) is made up of 25 frames per second. However, due to bandwidth and technical issues, it is impractical to broadcast 25 frames a second. Instead, 50 half frames are broadcast, and these are interlaced.
The TV picture consists of 625 lines. A field comprises half this number - 312.5. The first field contains the odd numbered lines, the next field contains the even numbered lines. You television merges them together to create on full frame.
But, because images move, it often happens that the odd lines and even lines are in slightly different positions, and this is when interlacing artifacts appear - a sort of shimmering to the left and right.
When shooting in progressing mode, there are no interlacing artifacts.

Why did you need to set your project to 1/2 vertical resolution?

I didn't need to. But since I knew I was getting only 540 lines of input information for each frame of output data I set it up that way. If I wanted to preserve more of the horizontal detail I guess I could let it resample to whatever size I wanted.
