Hello,

I have been looking for the proper settings to convert 1080p25 HDV feed from a PAL HV20 to ProRes422 in compressor. However, I still have some questions:

1) - Even after googling about I was unable to find out what is the main difference between ProRes422 and ProRes422 (HQ). Is it just a precision (8 vs 10 bit) difference?

2) - When creating a custom setting in compressor, in the "Frame Controls" panel of the inspector, what should be the deinterlace option ?

3) - Again in the "Frame Controls" panel, should the Output Field be set to same as source of Progressive?

Thank you.

EDIT - Ok some more points I've gathered up:

4) - Has anyone used the new prores transcode feature in 6.0.2? I hear it has some timestamp problems

5) - From what I gather, the 25F feed is stored in 108050i unto the tape in order to comply with the HDV standard. I understand that the video is progressive but stored in alternate interlaced frames. However, my question here is: some people say that to edit such footage you should set the field dominance to none (aka progressive) whereas others suggest that the field should be set to Upper first. Anyone know which is it?

Maybe I can help:

It's a difference of 8-bit vs. 10-bit.

2) - When creating a custom setting in compressor, in the "Frame Controls" panel of the inspector, what should be the deinterlace option ?

If your footage is 25p, then you're not de-interlacing anything because your footage is progressive, not interlaced.

3) - Again in the "Frame Controls" panel, should the Output Field be set to same as source of Progressive?

Progressive

Thank you.

No clue...

Although each frame is recorded on tape as "interlaced," or 50 fields per second, the footage is actually progressive whereas both fields in each frame are identical. Edit in Progressive (field dominance set to NONE).

I hope this helps somewhat...

don't use frame controls unless you want to scale, deinterlace, or change the speed. best case it doesn't do anything at all in that case, worst case it screws things up.

i always edit hdv natively in a prores sequence, works great with all the realtime options and preserved timecode you'll ever need. no need to convert until you render.
