My background is in still photography and everyone knows not to edit-save-close-edit-save-close (etc, rinse, lather, repeat) images that are in a lossy format like JPEG because with each new generation a little artifaction is added. Images that you intend to work on and then open again later and work on some more should be in a lossless format like TIFF.

I'm a newbie at video. What's the equivalent rule for video projects? If I have some footage that I've captured into an MPEG, and then I open a project in Adobe Premier Elements and I do some cuts and fades, etc, and then close it and reopen it again another day am I adding a new generation of error? If I make a clip with some fades and adjustments and then I want to use that clip in a DIFFERENT project am I adding a new generation of error?

It LOOKS like the project files for Adobe Premier Elements are relatively small and once when I deleted the original MPEG and opened a project that used it, it wouldn't open, so maybe the original is always retained and a project file is just a set of modification instructions? That would seem to be a possible solution to this. Does anyone know?
