According to canondv.com the HV30 will be released in March 2008.
Is it possible then, for us to send Canon a suggestion of software based improvement before they start shipping them? Please, just software things. Maybe they can post a firmware in the future.

1- Time-lapse
2- Proper 24p flags
3- A choice of different cine-gammas
4- A wider range in settings like sharpness and saturation
5- Rearrange the order or the white-balance settings, and the effects modes, so you can compare better between similar ones.
6- Color bars
7- Allowing to use the focus assiste while recording
8- Allowing to change white balance and effect while recording
9- Please, keep away from us that solarize effect or those ugly wipes. Instead, let us have the options of keying out all colors while keeping specific colors. Like everything in b&w and just seeing red things in color.
That must be so simple for Canon. They did it in an Video 8 camcorder from Canon that I bought in 2000. So, why not do it today?

any other software based suggestion?

Not software, but...new shutter please.

It would be nice if they used USB to transfer video content, but I guess that's ok. I was hoping they would do what Sony HDR-HC? series camcorders had. High FPS rate (for Smooth slow motion)! :P

Here are some more:

1. independent control over aperture, gain and shutter (especially when in cinemode)
2. flip screen content (for DOF adapters)
3. ability to use zebras and peaking at the same time
4. set the zoom buttons to slow crawl and the rocker at a variable speed
5. set the screen/viewfinder to B/W for easier focusing
6. play should remember whether I set it to AV or audio-out
7. record progressive in DV mode (why not?)
8. ability to read DVCAM (ok maybe that wouldn't be software only)

But I guess they couldn't be bothered. So it's pretty futile anyway.

not only flip the image on the screen, actually flip up right the images, so you can use any 35mm adapter so your setup will be less heavy and so your 35mm adapter and the price will be cheaper.

Maybe they should just make the software/firmware open source so we* could add these features ourselves.

*Meaning someone with programming skills.

According to canondv.com the HV30 will be released in March 2008.

Where exactly did you read March? I thought I heard April when it was first announced, and I'm seeing February on this page (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=16206) at canondv.com

I don't know anything about manufacturing timeframes, etc, but I would guess if February is accurate, the product is probably completed by now. Great ideas for improvements though!

I was, personally, really hoping for a focus ring on the HV30. I've been lurking on hv20.com for a few weeks now (just joined yesterday!), and thanks to all of the great input from everyone on here, I think I have a pretty good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the HV20 (at least on paper.. haven't purchased one yet). A focus ring would've been a great addition. So far I'm not seeing anything on the HV30 to make me wait until April though. February? Maybe.
