There is still much to be seen to determine if these even come close to the HV20 in terms of quality and ease of use.

I would imagine that they use AVCHD. It might be possible to use the SDHC cards like tape, recording once and storing the video on the card. It would probably be rather expensive to do it that way, though.

Would be good if it used 16gb CF cards, then you COULD have HV20 HDV stored for just over an hour on to em and the battery would last longer since theres no moving tape mechanism

What do camcorder manufacturers have against high bitrate AVCHD?
Or for that matter, what's wrong with AVCHD on tape at 25mbps? ???

I like tape for archiving. What would be cool would be simultaneous recording to tape and flash memory (which the upcoming Sony Z7 will do). Then you'd have the flash for editing, and tape for archive.

But what I'm really hoping to see is a tape-based HV20 successor with more manual controls and 24p pulldown flags. :)

Those cams look like very similiar to panasonics SD line, they look like theyll be aimed at standard consumers.

Edit: Ok the HF10 & HF1000 both record @ 1920x1080 24p and 30p so maybe it will appeal to indie filmakers. I guess we'll see.

I'm in the same boat... My first thoughts after hearing the details on the HV30 are it's not worth waiting for. Today, however, I read on Canon's site (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=16206) that it's coming in February. So now I'm having second thoughts. If it's the beginning of February, what's a few weeks? Much longer though, and I think I'd rather be out shooting with the HV20.

The specs are not listed. There are a bunch of empty space in those boxes. I guess they will update them soon enouh.

Have you noticed all the contradictions, even in Canon's own 'specifications'.

On the HV30 it says it will play 30p/30F, it doesn't say it will record it. Then look at the 'specifications' for the HV20. It also says it will play 30F.

The Canon site doesn't say 3 CMOS chips like the About.com site. I think About has it wrong.

Canon describes the HV30 LCD as Vivid. What's Vivid? It has the exact same pixel count as the HV20 (i.e. 10% of what the CMOS produces. Now you know why we want those HD portable monitors.) Vivid doesn't mean back lit, the HV20 has a back lit LCD. Vivid means that you can see it from a wider angle. This LCD swivils in nearly every direction. You can almost always aim it towards you expecially with a hood (that you can make for free.)

It's black, but no difference in the specs. No change of controls announced.

HV20 does indeed playback video in 30F that was recorded with XH-A1. The upper right of the LCD screen will be showing 30F during playback.

Canon site did say it can record 30P. This is a direct quote from canondv.com

I read something about the new LCD screen has better view angle so to avoid the image being solarized.

The zoom control is bigger and improved.

Just the 30P and black color body already enough for me to buy it. Well, I need a second HV20 anyway.
