Hello

I live in PAL land, and have shot my video in 25p and now I want to capture it in final cut express 4.0. But the only alternative I can choose fore capturing in HD is HDV-apple intermediate codec 1080i50, HDV-apple intermediate codec 1080i60 and HDV-apple intermediate codec 720p30. But none are 1080p25, ore what should I choose?

FCE does not seem to support 24p/25p. Upgrade to Final Cut Studio or After Effects, or use the cheaper solution: a brand new PC and Vegas 8 Platinum. A dedicated video station with 2 GB of RAM, plus Vegas Platinum, is cheaper than FCP/AE.

And of course, email Apple to tell them how stupid they are for crippling their product like that.

it has been said thousand of times : HDV capture IS ALWAYS enterlaced, even with a progressive shooting ! It is the same in FCPro !
so Yes FCE shall support 25p. No it does not support 24p.
I'm in Pal-land too so use 1080i50

Progressive workflow has to be set only as flag for codec definition into sequence. But you must always use upper field in field dominance for your sequence.

Well, this does not make much sense. It's either 25p, or it's not. Using 1080/50i is not the same as 25p. And if it is, the least Apple can do is add a template for 1080/25p, as they already have for 1080/30p.

I don't get it. Is 25p the same as 50i when it comes to HD?
But how do final cut pro look then? Will it work there?
I have a friend that have it, and maybe I can import it there and cut it in fce? Ore do I need final cut pro?

HDV codec in Final Cut Pro/FCE is not editable in "capture settings" (those we are talking about). There is no "capture setting" for 1080p30 as well !

Because the HV20 recording method is the same like all HDV cameras : all materials are recorded enterlaced. In fact even my HD CAM SONY 750 cannot record 25 full frames at full resolution : it is printed to tape as interlaced. The difference with 1080i is that both field are the same. Only scan method is progressive, and this is enough to built the image after all, even recorded in interlaced : 25p is then only a "flag", a "bit" that says "this footage was recorded in progressive". If you want to have 25 full res frames in HD per second, buy The RED (http://www.red.com/)

Apple offer a preset for "sequence settings" that is called "1080p25". But you won't wan't to use that one : Apple thinks like most people that making a sequence with progressive material means "no frame dominance". This preset (again, for sequence) will destroy your sequences as I said in previous post here : http://hv20.com/showpost.php?p=21825&postcount=6
I think people coding for final cut have made the same confusion here (maybe a video training for programers could be usefull here :) )

see the pict and understand why it is important to consider that the shooting scan method has nothing to do with the recording method, and the way you deal with field dominance.

I'm myself capturing using HDV or HDV intermediate capture settings, then I use a sequence preset of my own : field dominance upper field, using HDV 1080p25 or HDV Apple Intermediate Codec > Option > 1080p

hope I was clear enough.

so, what you say is that I'm gonna use 1080i50 fore my capturing, because there aren't anything that is called 1080p in fce?

Ok, thx, most helpful. I think I got it now.
