I already have AT897 and wonder if i can use this on HV20.
(i have a cable-adapter, xlr to mic input.)

or.. should i just sell it on ebay and buy a hot-shoe mic?

Don't sell: try it out first; I bet that will work superbly (with a good shockmount).

I take it you don't have an HV20 yet?

well problem with AT897 is a required phantom power. using a battery pack and all sound too troublesome.. ahh

AT897 with AZDEN shockmount works fine. its name holds up. very directional and all that good stuffs.
also it's not too long to show up in a screen.

Can someone tell me weather AT897 (without beachtek) or hot shoe mic (rodeo etc) gets a better result?

btw does beachtek make audio from AT897 better? (or does it only duplicate a mono audio?)

The Beachtek does not make the audio better per se from any mic - if you're using the mic on-camera. If you use any mic off-camera (e.g., on a boom pole) then you'll definitely get better sound with the Beachtek b/c it has "balanced" inputs. This eliminates unwanted noise such as RF interference, etc., that you can get running an unbalanced cable off the camera (the HV20's audio input is unbalanced). But on short cable runs (like an on-camera setup) you don't need balanced connectors.

If you are using only one mic, the Beachtek does allow you to record the same audio to both channels so you get mono sound but at least it comes out of two speakers. However, with the Beachtek you can use two microphones and record two separate audio tracks on your HV20's stereo channels.

Haven't used any "hot shoe" mics but the AT897 is well regarded for its price range.

The 897 can run on battery or phantom power... check your mic again... it will accept an AA battery and then you only need an XLR to mini cable to be in business.

Sure a Beachtek would be nice to have on hand... but you don't have to buy a boat to get your feet wet... just slip on your swimtrunks (in this case pop in an AA) and check that mic out.

In ANY case... do NOT sell it... that's the mic I steer a ton of people to... If you sell it you'll only be wanting another one again in the near future.

Nope won't show - you're good to go with the SM-3. Even with the Canon wide angle, it doesn't show.

let me get this straight the beachtek would be ideal for shotgunmic with boom pole...cause im looking for something that can be using as for film
