View Full Version : Vegas 7 (Plat) vs Studio 11?

These two packages are about the same cost, I've been using Studio for doing Analog 8 editing (I have analog capture card) to DV editing for a few years now (starting with version 8). I currently have 10.6 (10.7 won't work). I now have the HV20 and sure enough Studio 11 is out. It seems like every time I open Studio and want to do something it's asking for more $$$ (plugins, updates, etc). It's really starting to dollar me to death and I'm not getting out of it what I want. Currently I can't figure out how to export good looking HD 24p edited footage. I can capture it, edit it and export it as standard DV format but not HDV (I get export errors on just about all HD formats). I did get one format to work but it plays like it's in slow motion. So I think it's time to jump ship. It appears lots of people are talking about this Vegas Studio. For anyone that's gone from Pinnacle to Vegas can you give a run down on the features you like/dislike from one or the other?
Here's what I currently like in Pinnacle,
Ability to Edit the time line on one screen and preview the video on another
Ability to Capture->Edit->Write final product all in one app
Ability to created DVD menu's, sub menu's, etc
Ease of time-line editing, adding 'crops', drag/drop transitions
East of adding Titles/Picture In Picture (which I had to buy)/Photos
Will I retain all of this in Vegas? Also it appears a few individuals are working on an automated work flow for Vegas for getting proper 24p video in it for editing from the HV20, is this true? Does it work reliability?
Thanks!
Chad

I just jumped ship today, same $$ complaint(s) as you. It seems the majority here use Vegas, so I figure the support base will be larger.
Just now trying to absorb the manual and then I'll probably get ConnectNeo. Jury will be out for awhile I'm afraid, until I actually start to process.
I'll keep PS 10.7 as a backup, the problem will be to get rid of Pinnacle's pesty plug-ins!

Then you are talking about Movie Studio I presume because Vegas 7 is 5 times the cost of Pinnacle Studio......:hv20-smilie50:

Ok, so I've been playing around w/ Vegas 7e a little and the editing is pretty similar to Pinnacle 10, a little more 'pro' looking and less cartooney if that makes sense. However, same problem How do I export/save HD 24p video after I edit it? I was able to export a 4.5 min clip to uncompressed AVI, it looked AMAZING but it was over 6GB! That's not going to fly. The only thing I've had decent luck w/ is MPEG2. I exported the same clip, it was 800MB but had no audio oops, so I went back and created a template that includes audio and it's rendering now.
What format are most people using as their final/save format? I'd like something I can play back off the harddrive onto the plasma or burn to a CD or later re-import into some video editing program like Vegas and maybe edit again.

Vegas 7 Platinum (PLAT as I called it in the title of this thread). It's listed at 119 on the website. :hv20-smilie77:

I've found I REALLY like Vegas 7, still have a lot of work to do on my project, but this was a lot easier than I imagined. Patience was required though, in certain spots of Trimmer for example, but I've got that figured out, and am impressed with it all so far. Now back to the fun......
PS: I have a P4 system, 2GB ram, and found I had to apply "End It All" to stop a lot of programs running before capturing and editing. Then everything ran very smoothly.

I know editing/rendering is a very intensive process and will be unusably slow or even impossible without enough computing power. However, is the capture itself that intensive of a process? You're basically just writing 25mb/s to the hard drive, correct?
I'll probably be buying a new computer by the end of the year, but I was hoping that until then I would at least be able to capture the video from miniDV onto my hard drive with my now-dinosaur of a system (P4 1.8ghz, 512MB RAM, 256 nVidia video card, 80 gig HDD), and possibly make some basic edits, leaving it to render overnight.

My P4 3GHz was enough (or less than enough?) to drive to batty while editing movies. I have a C2D now a 2.4GHz so far, so good ;).

I'm just hanging on with my P4 (actually an AMD 2800 Barton, not the 2.8GHz recommended). Joe your 512k of ram will be the bottleneck in your system I believe, depending on which NLE you buy/use.
Vegas 7 recommends 800mz (2.8GHz for HDV), 256 MB ram (512MB for HDV), however, I think these ram amounts are way, way, low.
I have a 120GB "C" and a 300GB "G" for video storage and d/l from the camera some 42 (of which I have roughed down to about 10 minutes) clips and watched the 300GB take an 8GB wack.

Will the 512 of RAM be a bottleneck SOLELY for capturing the video off of the tape onto my hard drive using HDVSplit, for example?
Or, will my limited RAM only prevent me from playback, editing, rendering, etc.?

I've never really had a problem w/ a slow computer for capturing. In fact, I still use my P4 for capturing video. It's just when it comes down to the editing phase when you start interacting with the video, applying transitions, cropping, etc that things start to slow down (as it builds previews, etc). Then when you goto render you just start the process and walk away. So you can get away w/ an underpowered computer for Capture/Render (render will just take longer) but for editing it's all about how much patience you have. Me, I have little to none :).
I've been playing w/ vegas for a bit now and I don't like the fact that to change the duration of a transition I have to be zoomed in pretty far on my video just so I can see the little cross hatch and then position my mouse in just the right spot so the icon changes and I can grab and pull. Is this really the only way to change transition duration? Also is there any way to see a list of transitions/video fx that's been applied to a project? Zooming out of the timeline you loose the detail and zooming in requires a painfull amount of scrolling to see the entire project. With Pinnacle I could zoom out pretty far on a 1hr video and still see where I had applied transitions/effects.

I've used the bug-ridden studio back in ver 9 and swore never to touch that POS again. I retested it at version 10 and it was still a bug-ridden POS. I ended up using Ulead Mediastudio for awhile.
As biased as I am against sony, Vegas is a fantastic piece of software. I never looked back after switching.

I know of what you speak white_2kgt. Last night I was trying to figure out the fades and apply them. After using transitions in PS10.7, then looking for a little squiggly line in Vegas...well, it's easier to see in PS10.7.
That said, I'll get use to the Vegas way.....I hope....lol
