I usually edit with imovie hd and the camera shows instatntly. But when I run FCE it doesnt show and when I hit capture the program dies out.

The mac I have meets the requirements to run it. Im a newbie so I know it could be the smallest thing. Any suggestions?

Have you checked which Setup you are using? I use Final Cut Pro and was not able to import my video from a JVC HD camera. When I switched the Setup to HDV mode I used (the default is DV NTSC), it worked fine.

Under the FinalCut Express menu, choose Easy Setup, then whichever HDV mode you shot in.

Hope this helps.

Make sure you have the "Show All" checked, and choose "DV NTSC Anamorphic" if it's standard def.

I did that and it still wont work...It worked when I chose hdv 1080i and thats only with a tape recorded in hdv...the tape imports at a very low speed is that normal?

Doe,

If you shoot HD, FCE shuold bet set to 1080i (50 or 60 depending if you are in the PAL or NTSC area)), and your camera should be set to HD-mode.
If you shoot SD, FCE should be set to DV-anamorphic (NTSC or PAL, again depending if your camera is PAL or NTSC) and your camera should be set to SD-mode.

Be aware that if you shoot mixed formats on the same tape, that you have to set the camera into the right shooting mode, before you can capture the SD-or HD footage into FCE.
So if you try to import SD, while your camera is in HD mode, it won't work

1. Camera is setup properly b4 I launch FCE...shooting in dv wide
2. Went 2 easy setup and chose dv anamorphic
3. It still says its not recognizing my external device

This is givin me the blues...Meanwhile I guess I will capture wth imovie and import into FCE.

Thanx to all who help me try 2 solve this.

Doe,

what are your camera's DV output settings (playmode) set them to HDV/DV
Computer out to 1080i/567i

DV rec.mode to sp (no LP !!)

This realy shouldn't be a problem, I mean it just should work.

Sorry for asking, but are you sure you don't try to capture DV in HDV-settings vise versa ?
