Since the PAL version of the camera does 1440x1080@50 fields a second and the NTSC one does 1440x1080@60 fields a second and they store them in the same amount of bits, does that mean that the PAL version has fewer compression artifacts? Does it mean that the PAL version has better battery life (slightly less aggressive compression)?

yes better compression but no difference in battery life.

Has anyone done a comparison of the picture quality of the PAL version in 25p mode versus the NTSC version in 24p mode? With the 20% wasted space in the NTSC version I would expect that one would definitely tell a difference in compression.
