View Full Version : Fotodiox Square Hood or Cokin P Hood? (Anyone have photos of the Cokin P?)

So I was deciding for hoods, I could either go $20 Fotodiox Hood 43mm or.

I was planning to get a Step-Up Ring Set from 43mm-52mm-55mm-xx-xx-77mm to fit a DOF adapter no matter what. And the nikon lense would be 52mm.

So since my Nikon would be a 52mm on DOF and I would have a 52mm step up ring I could get a Cokin P 52mm Ring Adapter+holder and 3 Hoods for $20 as well.

So the fotodiox would only cover when I use only the standard 43mm lens, but the Cokin P seems to work with the 43mm stepped up to 52mm or with the adapter's Nikon 52mm.

The only question I have is the quality of the Cokin P. How is it compared to the Fotodiox in blocking stray light, etc. Is it a good hood? How many Colkins should I use? Anyone have pictures.

I like and use them both. The Fotodiox for the stock HV20 is dainty, compact and ultralight. If I need to stick filters in front of the lens, then I switch over to the Cokin P , though a Cokin A will also work. I like P series holders & hoods because they move from my Still gear bag to my Video gear bag.

i ended opting for the cokin p in case i ever chose to stick filters and as you said can use it for my DSLR as well. step up ring to 52mm, so it works on my 35mm adapter, DSLR, and standard :D. thanks zephyrnoid.

ill get the stock hood in the future i guess.

does the Cokin leak light at the filter slots or are they covered by the hood?

You won't be sorry. I sold all my film- based camera gear over the last 10 years and still own all my Cokin stuff.
It will leak at the filter slots BUT...
- a piece of black gaffers or duct tape temporarily will cover that for a shot.
- I LOVE the square hood since as I said, I flag with Black foil, cards etc.
- Many Many high end matte boxes and Hoods, like the Lee etc, use the same principle and it seems to be fine with care.
- How often do spectral lights really sneak in at that angle ??? It's usually more at the front of the lens that we experience nasty flare, indeed, a spectral light at a distance shone into the slot at that angle doesn't show up at all. Try it.
- Can't beat the price for a solution.
