"Finish the story"
We've got a fun one for the next theme, thanks to Reelaxed!
Anyone can submit the start of a story, and the filmmaker chooses one, and finishes and films it! You just can't pick your own!
Reminder of the Rules:
1) Can't be longer than 5 minutes
2) Shouldn't be rated over PG-13.
3) Video should be posted on vimeo official (http://vimeo.com/groups/antmansfilmfestival) page ONLY. Videos for the current theme will not be available to view until the contest deadline > managed by Vishus (http://www.hv20.com/member.php?3240-Vishus), AJUK (http://www.hv20.com/member.php?21073-AJUK) and drapeama (http://www.hv20.com/member.php?21859-drapeama).
4) The winner can enter the next competition!
5) a) Use of copyrighted material/songs : as long as it's not the center point/plot of the story, it's allowed. Otherwise user will be disqualified. Example: A Coca-Cola can/SONY TV somewhere in the movie isn't considered as a copyrighted infringement.
b) Use of copyrighted music both in lyrics, score or performance, other than such that is recorded incidentally during normal filming, without a release will result in the video being disqualified.
6) Entries must be made specifically for the theme submitted to, within the deadline. All entries made before the announcement of the theme will be disqualified.
7) Users judging the contests, Official Judges (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?43072-Official-Contests-Judges&p=400925&viewfull=1#post400925) or not, should use the template available here (http://www.hv20.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=12943&d=1314328449) to post their reviews. Of course, only the officials judges' reviews will be considered to decide on a winner.
8) Deadline will be announced in a 24h time format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24-hour_clock). The week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday. Days are starting at 00:00 and ends at 23:59. Also, please refer to this UTC/GMT (http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx) time to calculate the deadline in your zone (check on the right and select your country & state/province).
Contest deadline is Sunday March 11th 23.59 UTC (11.59pm)
Submit your entries to the following group ONLY: http://www.vimeo.com/groups/antmansfilmfestival (http://www.vimeo.com/groups/antmansfilmfestival)
The ideas you can work with:
1. "While watching a movie, you fall asleep. When you open your eyes again, nothing is the same."
2. "You read an article in the newspaper. It is so shocking that you rush out towards what you read."
3. "You're not sure what's on the other side of that door. You know that opening it is going to be trouble, but you HAVE to."
4. "You're on your way to an important event when your vehicle breaks down."
5. "You decide you want a coffee, but when you open the fridge... you realize there's no milk. But, there's zombies outside... and it's not safe. Will you get the milk, or risk a morbid day without caffeine?"
6. " You are walking down a street and feel something in your pocket. You reach in and pull out a watch. Something doesn't seem right, the watch is running backwards."
7. "You're a schizophernic aspiring filmmaker and decide to make a film so you call up a bunch of buddies however they give you a hard time so you decide to make it yourself, BUT one thing is stopping you..."
8. "You arrive home and find a stranger in your house, who's behaving as if it were his home. Naturally you are startled by his presence, but more curiously, he's equally disturbed by your appearance."
9. "A van drives down a dark street, unloads a dust bin, removes a manhole cover and places the dust bin on top of the hole."
10. "You wake up and decide that today is the day they die."

Story Ideas from Reelaxed:
"While watching a movie, you fall asleep. When you open your eyes again, nothing is the same."
"You read an article in the newspaper. It is so shocking that you rush out towards what you read."
I'll throw in two:
"You're not sure what's on the other side of that door. You know that opening it is going to be trouble, but you HAVE to."
"You're on your way to an important event when your vehicle breaks down."

If my idea is selected, I have a screenplay in mind. I'd be pleased to collaborate.

There have been many ideas already.. I'd encourage "Playing" to make ideas more simplistic because most likely not very easy to get a van...
Let's say 2 more ideas from people and then we rap this up and make an organised list of all? is that ok?
Reelaxed

Let's wait a couple more days and then make a list, I'm pretty sure some people haven't even noticed this thread yet.
Anyone can submit the start of a story, and the filmmaker chooses one, and finishes and films it! You just can't pick your own!
Can't you pick any other idea Huey? I think some of them are also great.

woah..... Are you sure that one of the themes doesn't finish it? Isn't being incomplete on purpose almost another way of being "finished" if it suits the world I am trying to create?
It is milk that is not supposed to be in the house so I'm not sure exactly how you could conclude that I am arrogant. :hv20-smilie02:
I have a gift in that my shorts seem to actually cause anger in people for absolutely no reason :hv20-smilie79:, I'm not actually sure if you are serious?
There is more then one way to tell a story other then having a "beginning, middle and end." Whether you enjoyed my short is a different question and I can understand if you did not. I am the one who gets to decide whether it is "finished" because I am the one who made it, pretty much as simple as that :hv20-smilie03:.
Eastern cultures have had circular storytelling for thousands of years, yet here in the west we are so stubborn in thinking that there is only one way to tell a story and that we must have all the pieces for it to "make sense."
Giving in to the "madness" is also a valid way of story telling in my opinion, especially when the protaganist might very well have a few screws loose. The scattered sense of reality can actually cater to the confused feelings they might be experiencing.
Anyways, now that I am done with that tangant... I had fun sorry to all who wanted to enter but couldn't for various reasons

Sorry, but Brendan should first be fed this decision by force. Decisions are supposed to be done by them in charge. And for credibility's sake a decision about dead-lines is pretty much out of the question in a competition. Unless that date was wrongly written those who are late are disqualified. Unless the winner begs on his own initiative to discuss about a possibility for them in charge to consider extending the dead-line.

1. The Ideas You Can Work With- Brendan Peterson
I liked the concept of taking the filmmakers journey and incorporating it into snippets of the films that might have been. The colour grading was interesting, and the first-person drug trip was a nice touch. Overall the film was fairly simple, and did become a bit repetitive after a while. Brendan certainly does have a distinctive style and this film fits right in with his oeuvre.
The cinematography was a bit on the loose side, with many shots out of focus or over/under exposed, however these issues tended to support the overall effect of the film. The produciton desing was a little worrying, it was hard to tell if the flat had been set up to look like that or if you guys actually live there. I hope it's the former!
Overall this was an interesting entry, and I'm looking forward to seeing what Brendan comes up with next. It's a shame there were no other entries, but Brendan would certainly have scored well if it had been a contested theme.

Please PM me your mailing address and preference for receiving either the Lowepro 9 x 9 x 9 cm Padded Lens Case or Lowepro 8 x 6 cm Padded Lens Case (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?45205-Antman-s-Film-Contest-33-Finish-the-story&p=432236&viewfull=1#post432236)?
OK got your mailing address Brendan... which size lens case do you prefer?
oh sorry, I'll get the smaller one :)
Hopefully you've received the prize by now Brendan...
Would be nice to see some more entries for the next one, but I suspect this contest will continue to struggle despite the popularity of the theme... pity.
