View Full Version : What am I? Producer, Director, Creator...?

I'm an all-in-one video maker. I don't make them for money (not yet) but I'm curious what I should call myself in the credits. I don't know much about the roles of the various people in the production of a movie so I don't know what I should be calling myself on these one-man-band movies of mine.

I'm thinking that "producer" is probably most appropriate term to use.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Here's a little list of what who does:

In your case I'd use what nzo suggested, or simply: "A film by alwyn"

I once made a computergame (Super Snake) like 6 years back and I won a competition. I did (almost) everything myself, and when the credits roll, the first 20 names you saw was me. I thought it was rather funny at the time, but nowdays I think it made me look like a gready lad.

I would create aliases for myself...

the first 20 names you saw was me.
I've done that too, with the same result! Tacky Tacky Tacky (watching over shoulder for a Taky attack...)!

I would create aliases for myself...
But how would they know it was...me?

to do a little variation on Robert Rodriguez's credit..

just put this tag:

directed, shot, and cut by: "your name here"

still lets people know that you did all the work - but doesn't seem quite as boastful as:

Director: your name
Screenwriter: your name
Producer: your name
DOP: your name
etc.

i'd stick with the "a film by" label

I wouldn't suggest producer. Producer is like the film equivalent of "lawyer" for the general public, and we all know how adored lawyers are.

If you want people to recognize you as a filmmaker, I recommend:
Written, Directed, & Edited by: ...

If you didn't write it, go for:
Directed & Edited by: ...

Pretty simple.

If you're directing, I wouldn't include mention of DP/Cinematographer. Just leave those out. Limit yourself to one title per phase of production (pre-production, production, and post-production).

If you'd like to go for something simpler:
A short film by: ...
A short picture by: ...

Good luck,
Sean
