I can't promise anything, Science Fiction was never one of my go-to genres... but I might give it a go.

Like I said, don't count me as an entrant UNTIL I actually present an entry.

Science Fiction was never one of my go-to genres...
Never mine either. Thinking it over though, I do have a comedy/western/modern day (as in, 1990s...) sci-fi movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113223/) on the shelf somewhere.....

Sci-fi could easily be some women's soap TV...as it's the exact definition of Sci-fi (kidding!)

Science fiction is difficult to define, as it includes a wide range of subgenres and themes. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction)

That being said, I'm actually thinking about something...that may turn into something cool...stay tuned.

That's too bad. I thought it was a pretty broad genre. Of course there are some really specific things that can happen, but there are so many fringes to work with!

AJUK
2011 November 2nd, 02:18
I agree. Science fiction is one of the widest genres there is. You could do pretty much anything and label it as sci fi. Films could be techno horror like The Fly, or fringe comedy like Repo Man, there is no excuse not to enter. The point of the contest is to get out there and make films, its easy to procrastinate, but it is hard to get off your butt and shoot! ;)

I wouldn't worry so much about being able to create a special effect CG alien. Maybe if you wanted to make an alien, story buildup and odd human shaped shadows or dark can create the same thing as full blown aliens. You wouldn't have to stress and worry if it looked real.

Ever saw the first Alien? We don't see it much in the movie, but still it's scary. Why? Mainly because it's been shot and how the tension has been created that way.
I'm sure you can come up with something really nice Tim!

You did it right, I received the email notification of your video being pending. However, I won't be able to log on vimeo until tomorow, so maybe Vishus or AJUK could take the lead on it? So far we would have 2 entries, if this one is accepted even being uploaded a little late. Better late than never!

Tim White - Spooky Breakfast
Story & Acting: 25/50
Sound & Technicals: 25/50
Score 50/100
Overall Appreciation & Comments:
First, I'm really sorry to have to say that, but I don't see where's the link to "Science-Fiction". I know you're alone, that you don't have much equipment but you did better in the past. Looks like you woke up one morning, why not shooting anything for the contest? It's more like a funny gag or something...
Story & Acting: Well, not much story in it, simple setup in a kitchen. Only 2-3 different faces as the sound of the window is heard, then there's nothing else...
Sound & Technicals: There's not much to say about the sound and technical, as there's like no dialog, no ambiance/foley sounds except the window that breaks. I think there's a bit of lighting, but that's pretty much all. There's some eggs-killing though!
At least you've done something, nice effort as you're doing it alone. Thanks for entering this round Timmy!
---------------------------------
RelaxedStudios - ParasiTe
Story & Acting: 40/50
Sound & Technicals: 40/50
Score 80/100
Overall Appreciation & Comments:
I'd like to say that in a full fairness, both entries were hard to compare to each others as they weren't in the same category.
Story & Acting:
- The story was good, even if I'm not sure I understood the ending correctly but the effort was nice!
- The acting was great, well performed and credible. Nice job. Only thing I didn't like was the color of the fake blood, which looked fake! The make-up was good too, well thought.
Sound & Technicals:
- The sound! Great! The echo when they're talking to each other in the room was a good idea! I liked the idea! I don't know if it's been recorded that way (because the dialog is clean) but the effect is well done.
- Technically, it was well shot: the dolly/slider scenes were good, one maybe a bit shaky. The framing and the composition of the shots were great. There's a good work in the camera work, the sound and the post production. I particulary enjoyed the color contrast in the first scene.
Thanks for entering this round, you did a great job!

My vote goes to RelaxedStudios with ParasiTe!

Here's my review so far:

Tim White - Spooky Breakfast

Story & Acting: 22/50
Sound & Technicals: 20/50
Score 42/100

Overall Appreciation & Comments:
Another entry from Timmy! For this one, I must say that I was hoping for a little more to be honest. Considering your restrained ressources, at least you did more than the majority and you put something together!
Story & Acting:
- Story...where are you! You were cooking an egg, the egg had emotions...then a window breaks...I'm still trying to understand what's the Sci-Fi link in it...
- The acting was nice! You expressed it quite good, but there was just not much to express unfortunately. The egg did a great job too! ;)
Sound & Technicals:
- Sound: as there was nothing else than the music and the window foley...what else can I say?
- Technicals: You managed to get a nice quality out of your 4x3 video being cropped to 16x9 and being SD. I think I've saw a reflection of a light in your glasses, and overall the lighting was good. You could have put a bit more work in the lighting by creating shadows to give the video a more "creepy" feel.
I was hopping for more, but you did better than me and you put something together for this round...
Thanks for entering this round Timmy!

---------------------------------

RelaxedStudios - ParasiTe

Story & Acting: 35/50
Sound & Technicals: 42/50
Score 77/100

Overall Appreciation & Comments:
Story & Acting:
- The story was good, I liked the twist at the end! A good proof that with a good story and a minimum ressources you can do something great! It was simple but it did it well.
- The acting was great, from both performers. The voices and the dialog was great and well interpreted. The faces and expression were believable! Good job!
Sound & Technicals:
- The sound! I'll say like charlie and I'll focus on the echo in the room scene. I don't know if it was intended, if it was recorded that way or if you add the echo in post, but the effect was really well done! The dialog was crisp and well recorded. I had (and charlie too) some difficulties to understand it clearly, but that was because of the pronunciation.
- Technically, it was well done and it shows a good work overall. The scenes with a dolly or a slider we great and well done. Only one was a little more jerky than the others. The cinematography overall was well shot. The lighting was good, even if it was mostly using ambiant lighting only. I would have focused a bit more on a contrasty style and I would have put some color correction in it, but it's only me!
Thanks for entering this round, you did a great job!

My vote goes to RelaxedStudios with ParasiTe!
Waiting on Palmer S. for his review, then we'll announce the winner and we'll check to start the next round.

I should have been more clear.... from Wikipedia:

The settings for science fiction are often contrary to known reality
The self-destructing egg was my sci-fi element. Re-reading the Wikipedia description though, I misunderstood the meaning...

I was hoping for something much better, but my mind was blocked until the Sunday before the deadline (aka, the next day).

From what I saw of ParasiTe, it was a clear winner in my books! :) Good job Relaxed Studios! :D

Firstly, we would like to thank you for hosting this fun contest and letting us submit our entry a little late! We were happy to be a part of the competition and are eager to compete again!

Secondly, we would like to thank you for the (positive) feedback and let you know that we are probably going to make more episodes of Parasite, so everybody please feel free to check our youtube channel if you want to know how it turns out. :)

1) As long as we're getting entries we can keep this contest alive! So we're glad that you've made something for this round!
2) No prob! That's one of the great thing about this contest: it's like free school. And instead of simply voting for a winner, we can review the video so the user know what was good and what would need improvement.
3) As far as it goes, nothing has been decided. We're waiting on our last review to be posted, then we'll be ready for the next one.

A third judge won't effect the outcome, just make it 2-1 3-0. But I'm sure you'd appreciate the feedback. For what it's worth, I'd have voted for you, Tim.

Sure the other entry was more ambitious, but for me at least, it doesn't work. Interesting it got praise for the soundtrack. I thought that was the biggest weakness. It was far too roomy for the setting and the dialog was difficult to understand, it has dead spots and is too hot in places. I had to push the system gain right up for the dialog to be understood and when the captor bangs his stick on the floor, my windows rattled. Poorly recorded and mixed. The story made no sense on all levels. I watched it twice and still didn't get it.

So we have an ambitious entry that makes no sense and has bad sound. Tim's entry is much more modest, but it works a whole lot better. That counts for more in my opinion.

Absolutely man. You're the judge, so it's your call. But different people will see (and hear) the same thing in a different light, so it's subjective.

I did mention that Reelaxed's entry was more ambitious and clearly more effort went in. But, for me at least, more in doesn't mean more out. A bit like the adage 'work smarter not harder.'

I also forgot to mention that I thought Tim's movie presented something outside of scientific understanding. Whereas I couldn't find this in Reelaxed's entry. So I'd say that Tim's entry was more on theme.

I'm with Draps on this one, Tims 'egg' entry didn't fit with any conventional reading of Sci-Fi as a genre piece, even the text was worded as more of a horror entry. I think he did a great job with the post zooms and pans, but the content just didn't fit the theme.

Reelaxed's entry was very long and would have benefited from a trim and a sound remix, but it was certainly on-theme and therefore the obvious winner, despite it's flaws.

It's a shame we didn't see more entries, I guess that is a natural side-effect of the waning board membership. :(

OK, I get it now. I missed the date on the first scene. I don't like those embedded stamps on video footage, so I tend to ignore them. Before you pointed out the captor's motive, I thought he was going to harvest his organs. Either way, seeking his victim's consent seems a bit pointless.

It is supose to be a web-series, of course everything isn't going to be explained in the pilot. :D

However, Derek does retort to Simon's words with "I'm not giving you my body!" with "It doesn't have to be this way, we can share your body." That's why he want's his consent.

...Or maybe he just feels bad about killing him. Or the mind of a person can't be erased without one's permission. Or this all might just be the act to see if he is prepared to give up his life. Get the point?

I know which one is it, because I've wrote the script for the whole season (about 5 or 6 episodes). You don't, because you've only seen the pilot.

I appreciate the feedback guys! Thanks!

If it's a pilot for a web-series you've had in progress. Then it's a not a valid entry to the contest. You should be disqualified and Tim's egg movie declared the winner.

Yes of course you know what it it means, but the trick is to let your audience know what your point is. It's called writing.

Did you shot the short during the period allowed? If not, we'll have to declare Timmy as the winner, as it's written in the rules every first post of every new contests.

Well Huey, if he had it written before, as long as he shot it/edited it during the period allowed I personally don't see anything wrong about that...
Let's say I have a good idea for something involving a car chase, I'm writing it now in order to shoot it later...what if the next contest requires a car chase? I simply thinks it would be ok, as I said, as long as it's been shot during the period allowed, otherwise, it's officially a disqualification.

There's always a choice, brother.

The idea of continuing this project and turning it into a web-series came halfway through the recording. It was written, recorded AND edited in the period allowed.

HueyNRolf, have you ever watched (or heard) about series named Lost, Fringe, Homeland or something similar?

Lost was an immense TV show, not familiar with those other titles. But for the purpose of the contest, you're supposed to make a piece appropriate to the theme which stands alone.

Trying to justify the shortcomings of your entry, by claiming all will revealed in subsequent installments, invalidates the premise you were supposed to be working within.

As we don't have any way to know 100% sure if it's been shot before the contest period, we rely on the participant honesty. I think it's ok, we had more than only one entry and it kept the contest running. Submitting an old video previously shot would be another story, but I remember him asking about the deadline:

Just checking, is it too late to still send an entry? We failed to finish post processing in time and wish to enter the contest as well.
So I guess he did everything according to the rules.

I have a feeling this contest next contest will have quite a few entries.
Let's hope so! :D

I meant how come she hurt both of her wrists? What was she doing? :D
Oh! *facepalm* The first incident she fell through a gap that was left in the bales in the straw mow in the barn (we didn't build it), and the second time she was kicked in the wrist by a new cow when she took the milker off...

I'm not sure what your problem is HueyNRolf. I have all the videos on my hard drive, date stamped, filming was scheduled over 2 days about a week or two before the end of the competition. I don't know why your goal is to sabotage us but you are failing.

while filming this EXPLICITLY for the contest, we came up with the idea to make a short series out of this because it looks interesting. that's all.

btw, not knowing the other series which are pretty much the biggest bang on the market at the moment shows that you are not much of a series wiever, meaning you do not like things that have a continuation/mistery or just don't have the time/will to watch such things, therefore trying to bash us/our videos, trying to get our video out of the competition is miserable.

@Tim: that's really horrible, I'd stay away from that cow for a while!

My problem? If you don't like my opinion, how's that my problem?
Quite frankly, when the videos were released, I stopped watching yours after about a minute, because it didn't interest me and the sound was bad. I went back and gave it another go in the interest of the contest. I also took the trouble to write up some feedback. It's up to you how want to respond to that feedback, why would I care?

BTW, I'm watching Boardwalk Empire and Hell on Wheels at the moment. I'm looking forward to the next Breaking Bad too.

1) You're right, it's not!
2) To each his own. I understand your point, even if I have another point of view on that, I see how you've seen things when watching the video.
3) That's nice from you to took the time to watch it back, despite the fact you didn't like it, and wrote some words about it, from you appreciation.
4) No need to go this route, right? ;) But I got your point!

I'm sorry for the misunderstading. Your opinion matters.
Don't take it personally, Huey tends to be 100% honest, which is or isn't a good thing, depending on the situation!

For myself, I enjoy his honesty. There are few on this forum who have the ears he has for picking up hot sound or telling you what to fix on sound. If he comments on my films sound, its the first thing I try to fix.

Being honest is always good.

I didn't take anything personally, but the fact remains that Huey has repeatedly said that we should not win this contest. I was racional and took his words as a feedback, but after seeing that he even wants us to get disqualified, I couldn't help but to think there is some personal nature to all the hate. I hope however, that is just me and that Huey is in fact just being objective. Previous post was a bit harsh, I'll give you that, but if it makes you feel better, it was written by another member of reelaxed studios crew.

No hard feelings.
