Probably a lot of people got hyped over Red, then it took so long they just forgot about it.

But finally, Epic X is in production, scheduled to start shipping next week.

Supposedly the Scarlet is going to be soon to follow as Epic X goes out the door.

Still no prices on Scarlet yet, and only a fixed lens version will be available.

It's only a 2/3" sensor, but it does 3k. You probably don't need a Scarlet if you're not showing anything on the big screen.

That was a false rumor actually. Fixed lens version will be out first, but the interchangeable is still in the works too, it just will be available XX months/years/decades later ;-)

Anyway, great news. Maybe it's time to start putting a bit of money aside for Scarlet...

I meant only fixed lens Scarlet available in the near future. As in, supposedly it would ship not longer after the Epic X ships, and the Epic X is shipping next week. Still vague, what's "not long after" who knows in Red speak.

the next camera released is supposed to be the Epic S (a baby Epic), adn THEN the Scarlet interchangeable, so thats' still pretty far down the road, if ever, subject to change, don't listen to what we say just look at what's in the store, in Red speak.

'X' Is that the roman numeral for 10, or is pronounced like the letter 'X' ?

I believe it is the letter X. Epic M is shipping now. Epic M is hand machined and assembled camera, not made on an assembly line. Epic X will be the production line version. I think the letters are for those characteristics.

The guts of the cameras are the same, but they are built with different techniques, the X is a bit lighter, costs about 10% less, and the M has an extra 1 year warranty on it.

The Scarlet fixed is supposed to cost somewhere between 6K and 10K ready to shoot. While not cheap, people spend this kind of money and more on boats, motorcycles, RV's, and all sorts of hobbies all the time.

If this isn't a hobby, but a business, then it's just an investment which you will make back over time. Making movies is strictly hobby for me, but I constantly read posts from people that make industrial, commercials, weddings, and often times their customers are looking for certain cameras when they hire someone. Doesn't really matter if that camera is the best for the job, the customer is always right if you want to get paid.

I imagine the Scarlet like an HV40 on steroids. It's a relatively small 2/3" sensor so you're not getting the DoF like a 5d Mark II. But you do get 3k resolution, so it should hold up better to special effects, or zooming in during post, plus should hold up well on the big screen.

Rather Sony's F800 (http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadcastcameras/cat-xdcam/product-PDWF800/)plus a constant T2.4 8X zoom lens, on steroids... in a small package.

Epic M is shipping now. You can order one of those. Same guts as the X.

If you're looking for a small package, check the F3 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/743866-REG/Sony_PMW_F3K_PMW_F3K_Super_35mm_Full_HD.html) ;)

I was joking. Nobody got the FCPX reference?

You don't know what you're missing out.

It's a cool camera, but...

It's a different concept, largely because of the 35mm size sensor VS. 2/3" sensor. "Cinema-style" workflow VS. "broadcast-style" workflow. As an option for actual purchase, i'm looking for the latter.

F3 is not for me: it comes with only three focal lengths included and you have to take a pause to "zoom", as well as carry the extra glass with you. It also has only standard HD resolution and it records to mpeg2 stream... not too spiffy compared to 5 megapixel RAW with optional HDR recording. It doesn't do slomo. It's about three times more expensive than Fixed Scarlet's estimated price, and if you buy a 8X zoom for it to get similar versatility as Scarlet it's no longer compact or even remotely affordable.

So, not a camera for me personally. I'll probably rent it for some jobs though, if not for else, to satisfy my curiosity ;-)

PS: i got to play around with Epic M a little already - just a few test shots, but it was cool nevertheless...

Epic X is now shipping.

Those are photos of customers that have received their Epic X order.

Next up for Red is full speed production of Epic X (many more cameras shipped), then release of Scarlet.
