it seems a reality now.
Canon yesterday's showcase of c300 goes somewhat faded with ScarletX
I particularly think that Red cameras look like they were made for an engineer and not a filmmaker, but that's me. Scarlet X looks promising at 10k price for 4k.
Canon's C300 has a price tag of 20k and it barely does full 4k - 4 chips and the requirement of special lenses? A little confused by this...
Will see, this is still beyond the reach of most pro-consumer and entry level audiences.
No need to start your career with 4k when there are so many good alternatives for a fraction of the price.

The Canon c300 has a 4k sensor, but finishes in 1080p. Should make for a super high quality 1080p.
Scarlet has a 4k sensor, and finishes in 4k. Very handy for special effects, zooms in post, and things like that, as well as a nice 2k finish for the big screen. (I believe there are 4k projectors but most theaters are 2k).
Price for a fully functioning Scarlet is estimated around 14k. You need batteries, storage media, etc., or the camera won't do you any good. Some people don't need any of that if they already have Epic accessories since they are interchangeable.
Plus, with Scarlet you still dont' have XLR inputs, you'll need to buy an adapter for that, and no internal ND filter, so you'll need a matte box. Canon c300 has xlr inputs and ND filter built in.

Xlr inputs on scarlet would be silly as if you are shooting with it you better higher a professional sound guy.

Many people on Reduser are using adapters for the xlr inputs. Something like this, or there are lots of others.

I feel it would be much better to have completely independent audio.

yes, and it still cost more than a full scarlet ?
I'm still trying to see footage from both cameras to do a completely bias comparison! :P
Honestly, shouldn't canon improve on the 5d hybrid group?
my two and half cents

Actually they are. The also recently announced works on its replacement.

I'm sure Scarlet will make some nice images, but I'm not really disappointed I can't afford it. I think there will be some refining left to do on the Scarlet. I might be more interested in the second gen Scarlet when more of the bugs are worked out, the firmware is more mature, and it's a bit more battle tested.

Can normal people without Pro-res also see what the Scarlet footage looks like?

So far no one has released any footage from the current Scarlet. It's amazing to me that people are buying a camera without ever seeing a frame of footage shot with that camera. I'm sure it will look nice, but thats' kind of weird. If you have the camera ready to ship, normally you hire a good DP (or give him the camera for a week so he can be the first to review it, etc.) and have him shoot some footage to show off how nice the footage looks from your new camera. Why wouldn't Red do this? I have no idea.
Anyway, this is supposedly what the Scarlet will look like. It's Epic footage (the same sensor), with Canon glass which is probably what most Scarlet owners will use for lenses.

But a Scarlet is not an Epic, so it would be interesting to see some actual Scarlet footage. there's some buttery smooth slo mo shots in there, and Scarlet definitely won't do that.

Everything Scarlet-X should be able to do is a sub-set of what EPIC can do: they share identical sensors, but Scarlet-X uses ASIC chips which didn't test fast enough for EPIC, with other processing circuitry reduced and simplified accordingly. Or in other words, anything shot on EPIC which doesn't use higher frame rates and/or lower compression than Scarlet-X is capable of should be indistinguishable from Scarlet-X footage. Remember that all RED cameras simply record wavelet-compressed RAW sensor data plus meta-data, so any additional processing (setting ISO, white balance, sharpening, etc.) happens after the fact in a computer.

I do get that. But there is, IMO, a big difference between "should look the same" and here's actual footage from the camera itself.
The camera is ready to ship. What would it hurt Red to release some footage from the camera itself? Why not give a Scarlet to Shane Hurlbut, or Laforet, Bloom, one of those guys and let them cut together a nice little short with it? Give it to some good DP I never heard of, I'm sure they'd make something nice with it.
Then no one has to say, it's probably gonna look like Epic footage, it would just be there you go. That's what Scarlet footage looks like. Seems like a no brainer.

On the other hand, when its big brother is already being used in production for tent-pole features by Baz Luhrmann, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, David Fincher, etc., and their biggest ongoing problem is demand outstripping supply, why waste company resources catering to the camera-nerd "opinion leaders"? They'll probably come of their own accord (IIRC, Bloom bought an EPIC-M).

Yeah, I'm with Eric on this one, seems pointless to release footage of a cam that looks the same as another cam that has already shot HEAPS.
I'm sure they'd make something nice with it.
And if they don't the cam will be blamed! :)

Same sensor, different electronics, isn't exactly the same camera. Just seems like you'd release a little bit of footage before selling a camera.

For anyone who might have missed it, the first Scarlet-X is now in its owner's hands, and stills and .R3Ds (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?67129-1st-Scarlet....&p=876535&viewfull=1#post876535) have been posted ...
