Has anyone made T-shirts for forum members before? I would love to have an official HV20.com T-shirt and would happy to help get it going.
I've made some pretty nice Iron-on's in my day but I've always wanted to screen something. Does anyone have any connections or knows the process? I'm sure we could get them cheap ($5-10) if we had a lot of interest. Maybe we could take a headcount?
What would they (or did they) look like? I picture something pretty simple....
Design contest maybe?

Design contest maybe?
+ 1
I would buy one (or many)... however let me suggest that the design not focus so much on the camera model itself, but rather the film community as a whole... as this forum is thriving even though most (or at least many) have changed cameras since their HVxx... maybe with "HV20.com" on the back... also, as most of you still use the black background/board with green highlights (except me, I use the white and blue board), I would suggest a black t-shirt with the writing and/or logo in the forum's neon green color, giving somewhat of a retro feel to the design.
Contest sounds good to me!

So we do two T's- the new and the original. How cool would it be to have the vintage "throwback" HV20.com T-shirt LOL!
I use the white and blue- easier on the eyes- I agree, the shirt(s), however they end up, should be pretty simple. I'm pretty sure the cheapest screens are 1 color, so I'm thinking like white T's with black lettering- maybe we could do a few diiferent like colored lettering or use colored shirts but keep the logo or font the same.
So, if the shirt is real simple, then it may come down to a FONT contest HAHA...........
HV20.com...... no, wait HV20.com....... or HV20.com.........
Sorry, not much to choose from.:hv20-smilie24:

No thanks Uncle Paully, I can't shoot in a white tee... they get destroyed too quickly... that's why I suggested black tees, perhaps with HV20.com in neon green lettering on the back, and a simple design, outline, or silhouette on the front (perhaps also in neon green which really "POPS" on a black background) that captures the essence of the film community here... for example: a HVFF, a DOF adapter, a follow focus, a clapperboard (my 1st choice), etc. etc. etc.
Something like this, with HV20.com on the back or on the front in the middle of the clapperboard...

NICE DESIGN!!! I only mentioned white because it's probably cheaper, but I LOVE the black. I like the green too but NEON looks a little cheesy to me. The green in that pic is a little closer to the "green" I think is best.
Nice work HD-tog! (my favorite nephew)
That's going to be hard to beat. It's an obvious, even safe choice, (the clapper) but that's usually what works the best in the long run.
I'd order one right now.....

The name change has been under discussion for awhile; Mal first asked for suggestions in the "mods only" forum back in 2009! He already owns a few domains which might work (i.e., hd-editors.com). I'm sure the secrecy is only because so many of the best .com, .net and .org URLs are already taken.

but the slate is a bit cliché to me.
I agree, but it's simple, makes a statement and would probably be easy for everyone to agree on...
The main issue (unless we vote) will be agreeing on a design.
Maybe we should let everyone submit designs and do a poll? We could put a time limit like the Antman's contest. This way everyone can submit something- The more the merrier, I think.
Hey HD-tog, what did you use to make that pic? I'm no graphic desing guy, but it looks pretty simple. Is there a site or free program that you could recommend so others could make a design? I'd hate to see a good idea not come to fruition because someone doesn't know how to produce it.
If it's been under discussion since 2009, then we should just assume it may never happen. Plus, the site will "always" be HV20.com. so it's not like we'd have to recall the T's.
I'd rather have an HV20.com T shirt anyway- no matter what the name of the site is....

JM2¢ (and I'm probably in the minority on this), but the slate is a bit cliché to me.
Yup, it's true the clapperboard is very cliché, but it works ... I only tossed that up as an example... in fact that design has already be created on a stock t-shirt site... I just changed the colors and wrote HV20.com on it... FYI if you want one (and I mean ONE, they will be happy to print it for you... for about $30 after shipping that is... LOL which is a bit crazy). It was just to get the ball rolling... but it shows the forum's colors are already pretty good and a simple outline/silhouette design goes a long way, so no need to get too detailed, which often raises the price. I don't know who could get us a good volume discount, but whoever is going to do the sales and distribution should be from the USA and very committed.

I'm no designer either (despite being enrolled in University for "Digital Media Design" to start next year) so for now, I just quickly personalized THIS (http://www.spreadshirt.com/kelly-green-movie-clapperboard-t-shirt-C3376A5722887) one... clicked on "Personalize This Product", changed the t-shirt design color to black, clapperboard design setting to green, added the text "HV20.COM" in "Machine" Font (Size 51) centered on the clapperboard, took a screen shot and then cropped the result... but I'll take a 10% commission just the same :D (funny thing is the person's template I quickly used probably gets a commission if you order one!)

Hey Uncle Paully, why don't you change a few different angled pics of the HVFF into a silhouette, pick the best one and design a t-shirt for your fans/customers? You could order a small bundle of them and offer them as an add on option with future sales... or individually to past customers.

1) The concept of a T-Shirt is great!
2) Before anything gets done, and before anyone proceeds it should be decided on how they get distributed, and how they get funded, and how they get sold.
3) the name indeed will change, but I haven't decided yet what the new name should be, so there's no stopping the T-Shirt from being "hv20.com" for now. There can always be a new one later....

Wow, you guys have been busy!!! It looks like this is a home run, so let's get planning. Like Mal said- distribution, funding and selling.
If anyone wants to get involved, we should appoint some "officers" to organize the logistics. Any volunteers? We need to get some quotes and such on shirts so we have an idea of how many to make and how much they will cost etc.
Then we should get the contest going (officially) and set some guidelines- like 3 entries per person or something, and a cut-off date. I guess the contest could start sooner, but having it all figured out ahead of time would be better so we can move as soon as we've figured out the design.

Cool, yeah those images (as stated before) came from a stock site (similar to Cafe Press (http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/index.aspx) and Printfection (http://www.printfection.com/pricing/store)) and reflect a film community, not necessarily this forum's community. I will start thinking of how to best capture this community's spirit on a t-shirt while using the "SF Atarian System" font, however as also stated I'm no graphic designer (yet). Because the name WILL inevitably change one day (soon?), perhaps I will pay tribute to the HXxx series by taking a stock photo of the model into Photoshop, creating a resizeable outline of the main components by selecting with the pen tool, and then bringing that outline (in forum green) onto a black t-shirt with HV20.COM angled across the chest as in the film strip tee posted above. (although many of us, including myself, have never owned a HV model, yet come here daily just the same to discuss various topics)
OTOH it seems to me many of us whether using an HVXX, a solid state version of it like the HF S series, a more pricier XH series camera, or one of a myriad of DSLR's like the T2i/T3i, 60D, 7D, 5D Mark II, Nikon, GH1/GH2, ETC, ETC, ETC... we end up trying to shoot, grade, and edit our footage to look like film anyway, so maybe a film strip or film reel isn't that far off from the essence of this forum's community after all.

Good option, no possibility of someone becoming overloaded with demand, suddenly dropping dead with our stock, causing amateur shipping errors, or printing too many, however their prices reflect that convenience, coming in at well over $20 a tee even with volume orders.
Perhaps before we go too far we should determine a price point mark to aim for, and estimate a of demand for such tees, like say a percentage of monthly traffic (could we have access to these figures?)
So what are you good people willing to pay anyways? $10 (though unlikely), $15, $20, $25 ??? (is that shipped?)

This is what I'm talking about- does anybody make T's or know anyone that does! It could be a lot cheaper and we'd have control every step of the way. This way we could almost make them to order too, have more design or colors, and it probably wouldn't require a ton of cash up front either.
Talking to people I know that have done shirts before from a shop- we should expect each T to be around $10-15 (for quality T's) unless we order like 100 or so, and even then it'll barely dip under $10. That's feasibly $500 or more to get it going.
Either someone will have to come up with that $$$$$ first, we take pre-order collections, or we find a way to produce them ourselves- I know Michael's (craft store) sells a pretty decent screen kit for under $300 but it would move pretty slow. I dunno, tough call here but it should definitely be the first decision made.
Just guessing, I'd think at $10, we should be able to get 50-100 people that would throw down for a shirt. If we decide to have a shop do them maybe we should post a "Do you want an HV20.com T-shirt?" poll and make it a sticky to see how many T's we'd realistically need- that way we're not ordering too many or too little, and we'd have probably have a few leftovers. Heck, if someone wants to put up the cash- let them make the money. It could be an easy way to make some cash if it's done right. I think $10 is the right price though.
So before we all get crazy making (hilarious/awesome/inappropriate/funny/cool) designs, let's figure out how we're going to make it happen....

That's a lot of shirts to sell. Not saying it couldn't/wouldn't happen, but going through all kickstarter hoops seems like making things more complicated than they need to me. Plus if you don't sell all the shirts then you're left with nothing and have to start all over again. It would be easier (if the right person could be selected) for someone to handle everything without messing with running it through kickstarter.
Also something to keep in mind for people designing shirts. The more colors/sides you start adding the more it will raise the price with a screen printer.
I have a 4 color press I picked up for printing some shirts for a few friends on the side, but I don't have the time to get it all set up yet and wouldn't be ready to run something like this till this summer.

I recommend to use a service that Erik suggested. Everything else would not be very good, as it involves an initial investment, and someone to handle shipping etc.

well, the teeshirt idea isn't about advertising, it's more about just the members of this forum who need something to wear around the house and/or going to workout and it goes to a good cause. This "quasi-business' will have to have a purpose. If there is a purpose other that profit, like something that can be accomplished. There has to be a story. STORY people, just like in filmmaking, business is similar. Even if people wear these shirts around the house I think they will buy them if they feel like something purposeful has gone into this other than profit. Even if the money goes to educating youth about filmmaking or about promoting the arts, something like that would be nice. Or even helping out the victims of Japan, where Canon is based, would be a good cause, and I think many would buy the shirts.

Perhaps we can have that design contest AFTER doing thorough research to find out which host site offers the best rate on distribution, then link up the final design(s) to that site with any profits/commission from sales going to fund prizes for the monthly film contest here on HV20.com, perhaps with one of the t-shirts themselves being a prize, like one for the forum and one that says winner of the contest, etc. Depending on future profits, it may eventually yield some "actual" prizes one day... Until then all you good people can all buy several of them and sit around your houses in front of your computers wearing them, take photos of yourselves and post them on the forum, and think of excuses why you are not out shooting something :D
Or... you could always throw one on, shut up, and get out there to shoot something worthwhile! Then people on the street will see you and ask you if you are a big film producer, and you can tell them YES and that you learned everything you know at HV20.COM, thereby increasing traffic, growing the community, and selling more t-shirts so others can also discover the joys of capturing/editing HD video!

This is a GREAT concept, but honestly- it sounds like a lot of work. Let's just make a T-shirt first.... If it works out then we can up the stakes.
Plus, and more importantly, we DO have a story here. In fact many. They may not be romantic all the time, but they're there- you don't have to think too hard to come up with one...
I think most would agree that these T-shirts are long overdue, so the purpose for getting one is already "built in" for most. I think the profit part is just a simple and effective way of repaying the person who puts up the money. It's like playing blackjack at a home game- The guy with all the money gets to be the bank- and have a better chance of winning. That's the price they get for facilitating the game....
Who is our facilitator?

Hmmmm lets see, from Roseville, CA it's 31 hours straight through on the I-80 E for 1,798 miles... see ya Saturday night sometime if ya leave in the morning! LOL I'll put the coffee on :hv20-smilie77:

See you Saturday.....
I recommend to use a service that Erik suggested. Everything else would not be very good, as it involves an initial investment, and someone to handle shipping etc.
Let's not make this more complicated than it is.
I just checked these out and I agree that this is the way to go. A little pricier, but we'd have all kinds of options from mugs to hoodies and it would only require uploading the designs. Done.
I suppose someone would have to be in charge of the "store" but it doesn't appear that these type of sites requires a whole lot of time. Who wants to work the register?
If we go the cafe press or printfection route then all we have to do is have the contest to decide the "official" designs. I think that it's important we don't make it a free for all, rather go with a handful of designs picked by forum memebers.

OTOH just a few seconds ago I just bought a Canon EF 28mm 1.8 USM for my T3i for under $450 USD shipped, which is less than $430 Canadian, and locally that lens is worth over $700 after taxes!!! SWEET!!! Go LOONIE GO!!! (that's what they call our dollar here, lol)
Congrats! For my t3i, I just ordered a Sigma 28mm F1.8 for $400. It will be fun/interesting comparing our lenses.

I was watching that one too used on eBay, then it hit $300 USD and I decided to just wait for the Canon... the used resale on the Canon has been steady at $450-$500 so I really got a steal on this baby... yeah I will defiantly shoot some tests with it, and may release some of my actual working footage if not too sensitive to my current project. I am also booked for trying my hand at some weddings this summer, so I will own all that footage for my demo reel, so one way or the other I'll get some actual working footage up. BIF's got one as well... great normal focal length with a cropped sensor DSLR... anyways...
BACK TO THE T-SHIRT DEBATE... So who's runnin' this show anyways... any takers? :D

Yeah, but somehow whoever works the register should be funneling the money back to the site somehow, in my opinion to go towards prizes for the resident film contest or something of the like... also, keep in mind the design should ideally be resizeable, probably one or 2 simple colors, using the "SF Atarian System" font for the lettering, and if it's an outline should have a transparent image/background.

Tellin' y'all, Printfection: I believe t-shirts (no limit on colors) start at $16 each before quantity discounts kick in. They provide the web 'storefront' and the 'shopping cart' and (assuming we don't sell them 'at cost') will send any 'profits' anywhere we specify.

OK, so are we all in agreement on printfection then? I think it's time to get the contest going...
How about the submission's first- Not sure how to do it other than a thread and everyone gets one post to leave their entries. I'd say no more than 3 per person wiht a time limit of a week or two at most. Once the design(s) are uploaded then it's on whoever wants one. Not as communal this way, but at least I can get an HV20.com 3/4 sleeve baseball shirt without having to guy a truckload of them.
If admin's have any ideas for the contest please tell us what to do. I would say a page or site with all the designs would be cool but I don't know.

I made a printfection store today. I called it "HV20.com Gear":
http://www.printfection.com/HV20gear
Nothing there yet but it only took a few minutes to set up. As long it as it doesn't require too much extra time, I don't mind taking the reigns on this one. I have a lot interest in T-shirt designing and selling anyway so this might be the 101 course I need.
If nobody objects, let's get the contest going.... I'm going to post a "T-shirt contest" thread. I think that nobody should post except for participants- I'll say 3 entries per person- that's fair enough, and the deadline should be..... uhh, how bout June 1? That gives everyone a few weeks to get something together.
Do I need an admin approval here? Well, feel free to override me here if necessary- I just want a darn T-shirt!! I think printfection will be perfect...

Ok so I have Mal's support and help on the contest. We agreed that a few different designs would be good and that printfection is the place we'll go with... It's just easier this way and the prices won't be too bad.
I'm going to create a "contest thread"- where ONLY participants can post their entries. We'll keep it open until June 1- It should be pretty easy to select the one(s) you like.
So we settled on three entries per person, but now we need to figure out how many votes each voter gets. I'm thinking 2 or 3 but I can't decide. Any ideas? I want to get this going ASAP.

The problem is whether or not we allow particpants to vote... I'm sure everyone would vote for themselves which would make a HUGE tie a large possibility. We have to get enough votes to get the numbers up so there will be a clear winner(s).
I'm thinking NO voting for participants just to make if fair. I'm waiting to see of Mal agrees on this or not before posting the contest thread...

I don't know, maybe the participants are required to vote for themselves just so it's fair. I don't know which polling program you're going to use but it's kinda hard to regulate that. If you're going to use the Poll feature on the forum, I think you can see whether or not they voted. If the participants do not vote, and the designs are very close, their one vote can make it or break it. That's why if going through the forum, the participants should all vote on their design right in the beginning so we know for sure they can't add that one vote later on when it's close. .... Unless there's a way to ban them from voting through the forum but I don't think this vBulletin software has that feature. Maybe...
Just my thoughts...

I don't know, maybe the participants are required to vote for themselves just so it's fair
It's kind of the same either way. I was going to say the same thing except that instead of them voting, we'd just add one to everyone at the end. Either way the total number stays the same, therefore NOT helping the situation. Let's just call it a wash- it's not like a contestant is going to vote for someone else's design anyway, so let's just get rid of all of their votes. Unless, of course, EVERYONE decides to enter a design! LOL
The best way to do the actual vote may be to just start a thread, that way everyone's votes can be accounted for and checked. I don't think we NEED it to be anonymous. It would be fun this way too because the voting could be tracked by all. The results could also be checked by anyone, and everyone is involved.
It's a simple idea, but I don't see it getting any easier any other way...

Would you guys be interested in supplying T-shirts to the Antmans Short Film Contest?
Almohada
2011 May 18th, 03:50
Yeah I was gonna say that but it all depends on the polling system.
I saw the new thread. Hope we get in a lot of entries within the next two weeks. Don't forget, you also need to post some specs. Most likely the designs have to be at least 300 dpi and probably best to have them in their native software file (.psd, etc...) so the print shop can use that instead of a low-res jpg. Very important step there to ensure they don't delete the .psd and keep only the .jpg

So I've had a few questions already regarding format, size, dimensions of the designs for the contest. I don't really have any answers so I figured we could all discuss the logistics out loud...
The main thing is to have the entries turned in on time and as close to actual dimensions as possible. I'm not even sure how many colors we can use or front and back etc. so let's all just try and get them in the way they should look...
If anyone wants to suggest an easy site(s)to get your design done- go right ahead!
I think each entry should be turned in on a T-shirt background template. If you have any trouble, just ask around.
Let's see some entries guys!!

Let's everyone try and go with the Printfection recommendations for your entries, but if you can't figure it out or whatever then just get something in.
I'm thinking that after we've declared the winners, we'll work with them to make sure we have the highest quality images etc. getting screened. Just make sure to be specific if your not posting on a T-shirt background otherwise you might be subjected to someone else's interpretation, i.e. location of text, colors, style of T-shirt.
What we have so far is looking pretty good- ONE MORE WEEK to make an entry so get going!!

Maybe you could consider changing the meaning of "HV20" instead...
For example: High(Def) Video 20

Holographic Video 20, (as in year 2020), etc...
Or possibly name it "HV20.com" as just a name without the images of the HV20/30 cameras, but still keep sections dedicated to the HV20 info, while prioritizing newer cameras.
Maybe have the meaning of HV20 in the FAQ.

HaHaHa MADNESS... Well this sucks... it's one thing to design a small bitmap or jpeg image and upload it to the server... but maybe the contestants didn't know how to design on a size adjustable transparent background .png
SUCKS if that is the case, maybe someone with a bit of knowhow and some time could do it for them?
I didn't have any time to do it properly so I failed to submit any of my purposed entries.

Oh lalalala, sorry. I totally forgot I had an entry in this. I'm not really skilled at photoshop so it might take me a while; I haven't really messed with it. (uber-noob)

Ohhhhh my. I don't remember darth saying anything about sending it to you, Mal. Damn you, Facebook!
I emailed it to darth only and when he said "Got the word that it's sent." I thought he meant it's being sent to HIS email.
I will PM(?) it over to you right now.
Sorry about that.

Guys I couldn't figure out how to attach it to a PM. It will have to wait until tomorrow... getting too late here. Don't know when Mal will get back to me.

You must have gotten my PM. Thanks!!! Yeah could not go on my computer yesterday and the night before it was real late so either I missed it or that part about sending it to Mal didn't go through.
