I was wondering if anyone is interested to do a docu competition? Doesn't have to be something real... fake docus are oftentimes better than real ones IMHO.

Yeaa. Fake documentaries are the best. Usually funny :)

Yes, good idea, cgbier. I actually have a mockumentary partly developed, but this would give me the motivation to go through with it.

Wait! The snow melts in Winterpeg?!?
Yeah but only for 6 months of the year... which by the way are +35 degrees (Celsius) and INFESTED with Billions of Mosquitoes... Wait! Why do I live here again???
Guess now you know why Bob Sanders remains "perpetually angry" :hv20-smilie77:

Don't know yet about guidelines. I was thinking to give a topic and a maximal length of, say, five minutes. The rest is open. I wanted to keep is simple as possible with the rules.
Just be careful with copyrights. Rating G or max. PG (US rating system).

But... But... Sex SELLS! Yeah OK, hmmm wondering if I should do a real one or a fake/spoof/mockumentary...
How long until a deadline? This will ultimately determine if I can participate or not...

Sex SELLS
You can do one of them wonderful "the sex life of a bee" movies we slept through on middle school...
How's about 4 weeks as a deadline? Any suggestion for a topic?
paperkut12

No topic. That should be wide open also. Just give the theme of documentary and let everyone go. Also, if no cuss words are allowed in a PG or whatever rating, then yeah, that should go too. Everyone is old enough to not be offended by a F*ck here or there.

Ok, first Documentary theme: A historical event or location in your hometown/place of living.
Deadline: April 30, 2400 UTC.
Guidelines:
- max length of 5 minutes.
- project must be done for this contest (nothing from the can).
- no copyrighted materials without credit.
- PG13
Post your work on Youtube or Vimeo and link it to this thread. The contest will be judged by a vote of the forum.
Have fun.

2011 April 1st, 22:28
Wait, are you starting your own contest here or something, cgbier? O.o
Also, a theme would kill it for me. GIVE ME AN OPEN THEME OR GIVE ME DEA...an open theme :).
And a length of 10 minutes max.
Ok, I'm starting to be unreasonable, but that's my last suggestion..for now.
cgbier
2011 April 1st, 22:33
I don't know if I'd call it starting my own contest. I just think we are short on docus here on this forum. Always them music videos, horror and action flicks get boring after a while.
paperkut12
2011 April 1st, 22:42
Well, I can understand that, I'm just not sure how many people who enter will actually create a real documentary. It would be nice though. I've never done one, but it would seem a bit more complicated than a regular short.
cgbier
2011 April 1st, 23:42
Actually, docus are pretty simple. See is a visualization of a college paper or something like that. You write about something you know or researched about. Just film that script. Straight storyline without many gizmos attached.
...and it doesn't have to be a real event. You can come up with something.

Is this happening? Might even give it a shot... 5 mins is pretty short, though. You get one or two good talkers in an interview, you've got 20 minutes before you know it :)

+1 (10-15 minutes is likely better suited for a doc), and the limit on most YouTube accounts, it's not exactly a short now is it, it's more about the content, so squeezing it down to 5 mins may actually hurt the finished product or writer's initial vision, you can only cut so much. I am OK with 5 mins though (like as if my opinion mattered, lol) but I think if we are going to do this, it's important not to loose sight of the ultimate Truth... that these productions are supposed to be about one thing, HAVING "FUN"!
If we're voting (not sure we are) I would say under 15 mins, but below 10 mins would certainly be better suited for a doc than just 5 mins.
Those Are My Thoughts...

Running at around the 5-minute mark, some of these entries are quite entertaining.

Yeah OK... 5 minutes is plenty if the story/production isn't good... LOL those examples at the link above have painfully bad audio! I don't think I have ever seen as bad as that! Still, some were entertaining, like the barrel one... lol

Yeah, I agree... very possible. However, I'm good with 5 or 10... some might need 10 minutes, so it may be better to give a little room and get a better final result. I don't think we're voting so it's up to cgbier.

2011 April 2nd, 14:24

LOL 22 mins huh... WOW ... Alright
BTW cgbier, the last thing I want to do is start undermining a contest's leadership, we've see what can happen if that occurs, so you know, this was merely just a suggestion to be a little longer than 5 minutes given the nature of docs.
Better start rollin' on this... although I don't have a clue yet. May even have to make something up, Winnipeg really isn't that interesting, historical yes, but I am not very knowledgeable of such things.

Just a suggestion, I'd say let the current antman contest end then maybe see where this goes? Unless you're devoted on running this thing right now not in relation to that. Just would give people a chance to work on one thing at a time. I don't want to pull any interest from that contest.

there are 2 types of documentaries,
1. good documentaries.
2. sentimental documentaries made by and for liberal weenies who want to feel sorry for anything any everything within their eyesight.

The 22 minutes are a half hour in broadcast. That's why that number.

I don't want to take any interest from Antman's contest either. It is just that not everyone is a film maker.

Have you seen the fairly recent (last 5 years or so) well-reviewed documentary, "My Winnipeg?" Sentimental look at the town the filmmaker grew up in.

How about the winner get's to pull two random objects from his arse (like a lit cigarette and an ace of spades), which must be used in the next contest? Makes it more challenging, right?

Yeah, it wasn't bad... not my kind of film though... Guy Maddin had me sleeping through half of it...

1) I agree, but it made me smile thought!
2) Wow...if it's that, then it's deceiving a bit. I don't think I would move to another place and start from zero if I ever change my camcorder...not only because of the reputation a user can acquire in a forum after a certain period of time, but you know how it works.

Why this obsession with ratings?
Forgive me, but I am living in a country where at one time a beautiful naked breast carried an age restriction of 21. But if the same breast was abused or tortured the age restriction was 16.
Who are we making videos for? The censors?

1) Good point. Advertise that it's subject sensitive before, then we can all handle some adult subject matter.
2) Yeah, take Commando with Schwarzy: back in the 80's it's been rated 18+ (canadian rating) and now when it plays at one of the two major channel it's rated only 13+...same movie though...About the breasts, it's totally stupid. Some movies are showing things that should be censored and gets a moderated rating to get more people to watch the movie (read: Hostel which is only 16+ here in canada, but not 100% sure). But on the other hand, when you need to show something for a purpose (read: something important TO the movie) it's often interpreted differently and earn a stupid R rating, restricting people to watch it...bravo. But when you need to show naked girls drunk getting f*cked in a pool for 20 minutes (which doesn't really ADD TO the movie) it's not the same, and it earns a simple 13 or 16 (depending on your country)...like: "hey guys, let's make cash with nude girls"...boring. If you want to see nude for nude...rent an X movie.
3) I wonder the same Kurt...I'd like to, for this documentary "contest" and for the antman one, just do it without ratings while advertising for disturbing content (nudity, extreme violence, gore, language...etc)
What do you think?
