This wedding was back in 2009. I worked with this photographer refused to adopt new technology.

That flash light looks like a vacuum tube to me.

He told me he would not trust Li-Ion technology. That's why he carried a HUGE battery pack on his belt (see picture below). Throughout the day, he asked everybody pause the action (e.g. cake cutting) to wait for him to change battery.

Then what about the outcome of his photos? You be the judge

Open flash? So what? I liked to use it. Less of the deer in the headlight look.
Hoever, overexposed is overexposed. But that says more about the photographer than the technology.

he asked everybody pause the action

I've shot more wedding stills than videos, and I always made sure I had enough battery charge or enough frames left (back when I used film) when any of the important things were about to start.

(I have asked people to pause and pose, though, but that's different...)

Yup! Asking people to pose for shots is different than asking everybody to wait for him to change battery, that happens very often throughout the day. It would be okay if the photos are jaw dropping beautiful. All those that I received from the bride, they are dull, flat, over-exposed and bad composition.
