Premiere Elements 3.0 Won't Scene Detect

Hi, I'm as green as they come, so this question may seem very elementary to you. Nonetheless, the solution to the problem will save me tons of time and lots of headaches.

Premiere Elements 3.0 says that Scene Detect is set at default and yet it captures my footage as one large file (8+ gigs) instead of twenty or thirty different scenes as it should have.

Can anyone point out what I've done wrong. I'm sure it's just a basic setting that isn't documented by Adobe and that I haven't found.

Check your scene detect settings: Go to the "more" button in the capture window and see if scene detect is selected.

BTW: Very annoying fact is that the HV20 does NOT get a capture preview, at least not in my case and this issue is also adressed in the Adobe Premiere Elements forum.

Thanks for the reply, BarnOwl. Well, yes, Scene Detect is checked in the "More" pull down menu and cannot be changed (at least not there), so I assume that's the default the Help menu is referring to. So, if that's on by default, what else could I be doing wrong?

And, yeah, I'm not thrilled that the screen is black as the program is capturing the video. I guess that's to preserve Premiere Elements from crashing or hanging. If that's true, then I'll live with that trade-off.

So, BarnOwl, I take it your Elements 3.0 properly detects the various scenes, eh? Well, that gives me hope.:hv20-smilie110: By the same token, do you have any other ideas?

So, I've decided to use the widely recommended HDVSplit (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/HDVSplit.htm) to solve this problem.

After downloading, installing, and configuring ffdshow (http://http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow), HDVSplit worked well and quickly. Thank god. I really hate fiddling with silly things that can easily be solved...I guess we're all that way.

Still, I would like to know why PE 3.0 won't scene detect when freeware like HDVSplit works so well.

Actually I tested elements 3.0 briefly. But your post made me have a look at the test footage again: No scene detect!
Anyway, I didn't like Elements because of this and the incredible rendering time. I use a dual core PC with 500Gb Raid (Dell Dimension 9200) and in Vegas the footage renders at least twice as fast!

After using HDVSplit, I found that ffdshow caused conflicts with CNN videos, so I uninstalled ffdshow.

I've since downloaded the trial of Sony Vegas Platinum 7.0 and I was wondering if you could help me configure the capture.

I want Vegas to capture at 1920x1080i (I'm not using 24p right now), but I'm getting 1440x1080. Sorry for such a basic question, but I'm finding video editing software to be less than intuitive...mind you, I think Vegas will be more user friendly than Premiere Elements 3.0...also, will Vegas automatically scene detect? I can't find where to configure this.

Also, could you explain in Capture "Prefs," what timecode format is best, drop or non-drop?

Gosh, I'm a real NOOB, eh? Any help at all will be appreciated.

Maybe your questions can be answered better by a Vegas user, but all HDV footage is recorded in 1440 x 1080, pixelratio 1.333. This will give you the right capturing and in Pinnacle this is set automatically as you connect the cam through firewire.
Checkout this thread: http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=91500. That's the reason I use Pinnacle. (KISS=Keep It Simple and Stupid......:hv20-smilie79:)

BarnOwl...That was helpful information. I don't know why I thought you used Vegas...I must be reading too many threads. Thanks for the link. I'm going to look into Pinnacle myself. I like the idea of KISS, too. The simpler the better.

Did you set the date and time on your HV20? Perhaps the PE3 scene detect works off of that time stamp.
