As promised here's my version of DIY mattebox. Although it's not near completion yet. I was shopping at Fred Meyers yesterday and saw this black bin thing like and thought it would be great for the DIY matte box. As for now enjoy :hv20-smilie77:

That's pretty neat. But tell me about the follow focus. It looks interesting. I love the ingenuity and enthusiasm of everyone here...

It was based on Shoot_me _silly thread. The focus wheel is not final yet, but it useful for now. The whole thing consist of these parts, a fishing reel, 25T gear, 72T gear cut, dummy CD, I'm not sure where that black nob thing is, hair spray cap didn't tell the wife that I took it from her, shhhhh. And a thin plate piece to bolt the reel and the rig together.

It looks really nice. Although I would recommend painting the mattebox a matte black to avoid light from bouncing on the plastic and right back into the lens. And to finish it all off, a nice french flag on top of the matte box.

May I ask a silly question: what is a matte box for?

To put Matt in of course! :hv20-smilie77:
Joking Only.
It is to keep stray light out of the lens and you can add filters to it to get specific effects or balance light settings.
Not necessary but a good addition as one moves forward.

Aha...a sort of lens hood. And I suspect to look cool...a chick magnet? :hv20-smilie84:
Thanks ~ John

Can I add a few silly questions :-)
(1) what's the switch button for on the front?
(2) do you still control the exposure, shutter speed, etc via the menu?
(3) do you still need the built-in focus? is it auto, manual (what distance)?
(4) what's the long lens, I can read 50mm but it's a bit long for that?
(5) looks like a lens cap inside your Matte box?

86evolution: I meant to say that is an amazing rig! A lot of care, attention and research would have gone into it. Well done mate.

"A matte box is a camera accessory that essentially does the same thing as a lens hood and also mounts in front of the lens, but usually includes adjustable fins called French flags. These can be moved and adjusted to reduce lens glare.
Another purpose of a matte box is to hold glass or plastic filters in place in front of the lens. Today, matte boxes are made for DV cameras and HD cameras for the same reasons as a film camera. Some are supported by two rods that run the length of the camera, while others are supported by the lens itself."

I really love the set-up... it's how I would like mine to look... except I have a static adapter. Quick question... what is that big box that the monitor is attached to?

Big black box is where the wires go in an out from. The quality of the LCD is pretty decent, but not that sharp.

That thing is pimp! I love the large DIY following here on this site!
I look at your rig and I just know it's cool, and I couldn't tell you what half of the stuff is! LOL
I was wondering when someone said 'external monitor' to fix the fliip of a 35mm adapter what one would look like. Now I know! haha
Nice. Really nice set up!
And lastly I have probably a stupid question for ya here, but I'm curious and new at all of this so bare with me, but...
What is the round black thing with the piece of clear round stuff behind it on the left side? Thanks... :hv20-smilie70:

Wow I can't believe that this thread is still exist, LOL. There's so many changes to my setup since then. I broke off the matte box and never got around to get it fix. As for the flag, I used a bent steel plate and screw it on to the matte box. Yes the round black thing is my DIY follow focus, but I also have updated that to a better version of it. Here the updat

So I liked that pic of the rig, I clicked it and went to photo bucket...and saw your other pics... like:

Which made me laugh...and think is more impressive then the camera rig... of course that could just be me.
Anyway, I liked the hood and the french flag. What method did you use to attach the wood cut outs to the hood to the camera?
