Difference between iMovie HD and iMovie '08?

I'm using iMovie '08 (version 7.1) and am able to import my HD videos and export in full HD.

So my question then is - what is iMovie HD if I'm able to capture, edit and export using iMovie '08?

One is older than the other. HD was first and better according to those who like to have more control. 08 is much more simple to use and to throw simple things together, both are HD.

Also iMovie 08 supports AVCHD and iMovie6 HD doesn't.

Yes and no, it really depends on what you have and what you want.
My pro stuff I edit with FCP but my fun stuff that I want in and out in a hurry is easy in 08.

Well, you have FCP. You only use '08 for that reason exactly: throwing together stuff. But if someone only has access to a single editor, it better be '06.

And boot into WinXP with Vegas when I actually realize what I'm doing and want more control!

do i need to do something with imovie 08 to have it import in hd?

all i do now is connect my camera, and click import. however the quality is a bit grainy and i guess i expecting better, so maybe i'm not importing in true hd.

Yes you need to set your Imovie> Preferences > Import 1080I video as >Full-1920 x 1080

hmmm, i do have it at full. do you have ntsc or pal? also, do you do pulldown in imovie?? what happens if i dont?
