Jim Jannard announced today (http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53549)that an EPIC camera was stolen in France. This happened today (or last night). For those of you in France that can use an extra $100,000 this is your chance. This is what the camera looks like:

The 00006 is engraved on the bottom.

I'm still confused on how they get something like that to look like this (http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://files.enkistudios.com/NewsPhotos/RedEpic1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://enkistudios.com/2009/11/reds-epic-announcement-reminds-us-that-its-all-subject-to-change/&usg=__K27InxkwgvtO2dezNIUdV_fUZAA=&h=461&w=554&sz=72&hl=en&start=26&sig2=BWsO0p03voPK5pzjG5I0bw&zoom=1&tbnid=6H6pxrQxm09vxM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=142&ei=bNwgTc6mOsyhnAfwheiUDg&prev=/images%3Fq%3DRed%2Bepic%2Bphotos%26um%3D1%26hl%3De n%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Ds%26biw%3D1024%26bih%3D540 %26tbs%3Disch:10%2C798&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=737&vpy=244&dur=570&hovh=205&hovw=246&tx=158&ty=126&oei=TtwgTY2JDITrnQf72ZizBA&esq=3&page=3&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:26&biw=1024&bih=540)...

I'd laugh if it was stolen by a homeless person, who managed to get 0.50 Euro scrap value after melting it down....

Ian's picture is looking at the bottom of the camera. It's the bit behind the matte box & lens and in front of the battery, SSD, I/O module & REDmote in yours ...

While you can tart up an EPIC with all those accessories, it's not necessary just to shoot: Mark from OFFHOLLYWOOD posted several pics of barebones setups on his Twitter page (http://twitpic.com/photos/OFFHOLLYWOOD) before the camera was stolen.

Mal, the circumstances of the theft were anything but a laughing matter: somebody forcibly entered the chalet where Mark and eight members of his family, including his kids, were sleeping, and took time to empty everybody's wallets and purses as well as snatching the camera. Luckily, nobody was physically harmed. I hope they catch the bastards.

I would hope that one who buys a $58,000 camera would have also purchased some sort of insurance policy for it....

If it was genuinely stolen by opportunist thieves, then the chances are it will either turn up in a secondhand shop or be dumped somewhere. Shame, but one mans priceless camera is another mans piece of useless junk.

I once had a set of 16mm rushes stolen, they were irriplaceable to me but zero use to anyone else, I had visions of my work being unfurled all over the English countryside 'for a laugh' and boy was I happy when the cannisters turned up unharmed! Obviously in my case, the thieves had the sense to realise that they had nothing worth selling.

I don't know who these folks are but I'm glad they are all ok. It probably wouldn't hit me until the next day on how close we were to the unexplainable. Everything else could be replaceed....but not my family.

Who here lives closest to France??? All I can say is ..give it back.

:)

I really hope they get it back and catch the people who did it. Thieves are the lowest.

Well, the camera cannot be used without anybody asking where they got it. Unless it's for personal use.

But if somebody buys it, and posts footage from it on Youtube or Vimeo... they're federally lalalalaed.

Yeah. Imagine, Azmyth had trouble to deal actors when he was shooting with an HV40 (as it's a small camcorder). Now dealing with the same actors while shooting with that "butter-box" would lead to something interesting I guess.

1) That's a point, but who could really recognize it? And who would use a RED for personal use? (I mean, accessories, batteries that cost the total...etc)
2) Could you recognize any footage shot on RED compared to a 7D with the crappy Youtube compression? I would probably not be able to do it. That, and the fact that it probably takes a real bad-ass computer to deal with over 2K resolution in the RED format, I might be wrong...

You will probably be able to buy knock-offs on eBay in a few weeks.

Starting bid at 99.99$USD from a chinese seller...4K resolution with a first generation CMOS sensor with horrible Jello-effect, awesome.

I think Holga may soon come out with a 4K digital movie camera that uses a mechanical rotating shutter made of plastic to eliminate the jello effect from the inexpensive CMOS sensors. The design will be based on the Red, except powered by 24 button batteries instead of bricks. A complete set of primes made with plastic lenses will be included.

One of the best Science Fiction short stories I ever read was about a guy from the original manufacturer on a mission to buy a knock-off in order to steal the improvements the Chinese made to his design.

That camera must have real sentimental value, because a new one would cost almost half that.

The fact that it was the 6th one produced says something though... :p

I tried to Google it, but it's long time since I read it. I think the guy worked for Rolex and was attempting to steal back the improvements the Chinese had made to knocked-off Rolex robots.

Wow that's pretty great, but Google turns up nothing, any more details or clues you could provide? Where do you think you may have read it?

Yeah I Know, This Is So Very "Off Topic"...

:) Broer or Boet is fine with me, even though I don't speak Afrikaans, but I am not a Boer. Funny thing though, I did a video of concert in a venue called "Die Boer" (The Farmer) on Saturday. Sorry we are straying from the Epic subject here.

They tried very hard to get everyone to speak Afrikaans, but I never went to school here, so I escaped it.

Wow, HOW did I miss this? I bet it never was or maybe the person privately "settled" with red/got money if they turned it in and red didn't continue to publicize the issue.
