jako209
2010 December 12th, 07:36
Rule A:
NO IMAGE HOSTING ON EXTERNAL SERVERS.
Images for the games need to be ATTACHED to the post, and thus uploaded to our server.

Rule B:
ONLY ONE GUESS OF ALL 5 MOVIES PER PERSON PER PICTURE SET!!!
There will be an initial set of 5 images, and your guess has to INCLUDE ALL FIVE movies. Simply guessing or answering one, two, three or four of them will disqualify you from that particular game, and the post will be removed.

If no one can answer all 5 movies correctly within a reasonable time, a new set of 5 NEW pictures will be posted. Clues may or may not include which, if any, of the movies have been correctly guessed, at the discretion of the person starting the game. Only persons who have already posted their answer can participate in discussing the correctness of any or all of the previous guesses.

Rule C:
The WINNER of the game can start a new game IN A NEW THREAD.
NO ONE ELSE (unless yielded so by the winner).
Game type one or two can be started.

Rule D:
Once there's a winner, PLEASE post the correct name of all movies into the thread (spelled correctly, and capitalized correctly, and not in italics or bold face.)

Rule E:
The correct title format is: "Game" / space / "#" / number / "(v2)"
Example: " Game #212 (v2)" (without the ")
(no space between the # sign and the number!)
"v2" denotes version two, for version one, there needs to be no version number.

Rule F:
These complete rules (A to E) or (1 to 6 if game type 1) have to be copy&pasted into each new game's first post.

Sorry this is late, I was halfway through posting it last night and my internet cut out, and at 2am in the morning, I just cba to fix it. So anyway, here we are!

I have to admit this time I'm just gambling on the other players being correct. But it looks like the last one is wrong. You'd think a google of "marijuana growing" would turn up something likely, and it does, but I can't decide on which one. And I don't recognise that actor, either. So, I've got nothing at the moment. :(

As promised, here are the next set of five screenshots. Also, seeing as all of you now have the first four, to save time next time I upload the screenshots, I'll only do the movie you're missing. It just saves me having to go through each film looking for a cool freeze frame. So the first four, as you lot know, are:

1. Seven Samurai
2. Boyz n the Hood
3. Eurotrip
4. Scarface

But what's the fifth? First one to get it right wins.

Sorry Mal, this rehash of the old game is confusing... I preferred the old way of doing it.

Janke

I preferred the old way of doing it.

I agree. In fact, we have now basically arrived at a situation which is, in essence, equal to the old game.

We now all know that the four first are correct, the last one missing. Eventually, every game will boil down to this point, unless the choices are so obvious that someone gets them all within a few hours, as in the first v.2 games. So, what's the use of compicating the game? Just to be able to post more screenshots?

That's why I prefer the old style game, and quick-paced, a new pic every 8 to 12 hours, where we start with more difficult screenshots, work our way through clues, hints and more easier shots.

(I think Daniel is right, BTW.)

2010 December 14th, 17:44
Yes Daniel! Well done! It's Harry Brown. And sorry for violating the rules, its just when everyone was getting the first four right, I just thought... ah well. My bad. Sorry Mal. But I think Daniel and Janke have a point though, every game of this v2 will eventually reach this point (if they continue).

Just wondering, when you brought out v2, did we HAVE to use it? Or was it optional? Maybe if it isn't optional, could we make it optional? Just a thought.

It has been optional since the new game type was introduced, just depends on what the thread starter wants to do. Personally I like the new game and I don't mind the challenge in having to guess 5 movies.

You guys are funny.

Rule C:
The WINNER of the game can start a new game IN A NEW THREAD.
NO ONE ELSE (unless yielded so by the winner).
Game type one or two can be started.

...also:

"I made it clear that there's TWO versions;
the winner picks which version of the game is used. If no one else likes this version,
then it obviously won't get played......well, until I come along again, that is....."

You guys are "quetching" about something that's self-inflicted! :hv20-smilie77::hv20-smilie77:

I just don't understand the opposition to this new version of the game.

The old game relied too much on hints and clues and detective work, (which could get quite time-consuming and boring), rather than memory and recognition. Too often people deliberately posted a blurred snippet of a scene, containing barely enough information to use in a google search, and you had to chase down the title by laborious research. What's the fun in that? The only thing that says about the winner is that he has too much idle time on his hands. It doesn't reflect his knowledge of films, or his visual memory, or his wide experience in movie-watching.

Occasionally, you would get a screenshot which had some particular relevance to the specific film, (instead of to a hundred similar ones), but those were few and far between. In most cases, I suspect the game was won by the guy with the most free time to google for hours at a time, and to try every combination of elements until he lucked into the right one.

That's not a game, that's just an exercise.

But this new game gives you the opportunity to use your visual memory, (which is what we film-lovers are all supposed to have, and to cultivate). The game master is supposed to select images that are unique, memorable and highly specific, and we have to search our memories and come up with the names, instead of tediously searching someone else's memories, ie, the internet.

Playing this version, you get the instant pleasure of recognition, the satisfaction of being able to put a name to a familiar and favourite image, and the gratification of seeing the best scenes of your favourite movies displayed for others to see and appreciate.

So I think the basic rule of this version has to be that you should select images that are unique to the film you're presenting. We shouldn't post shots of something that could have come from hundreds of other films. The trick in this game is to pick a shot that is very unlikely to appear in any other film, while at the same time is not a dead giveaway, (like eg, the Red Sea parting!:hv20-smilie84:)

It's more fun for the game master, because he has much more latitude in picking just the right shot. And it should be more fun for the players, because most times they'll know one or two of the movies instantly. So you get a bit of each element of the old game. You get to see again a bit of a film that you probably love, and you get to do a little hunting down as well.

What's not to like?

The first few goes of V2 went better. This one may of gone west through the lack of proper feedback from the host. 'You are very close' doesn't help much. Perhaps the tally on each guess (3 right etc.) should be in the rules?

1
2010 December 14th, 19:45
Exactly! :)

The old version as this new version does rely on -and its enjoyment is- in direct relation to the ability of the game-master's choice of pics.

Jim E

We now all know that the four first are correct, the last one missing. Eventually, every game will boil down to this point, unless the choices are so obvious that someone gets them all within a few hours, as in the first v.2 games. That's why I prefer the old style game, and quick-paced, a new pic every 8 to 12 hours, where we start with more difficult screenshots, work our way through clues, hints and more easier shots.

If you want fast games, (and who doesn't?) this new version is a better way to get them, if it's played correctly. Admittedly it can end up becoming just a slower version of the old game, IF we only post obscure screenshots designed to vaguely hint at the title. But one of the new rules, as I interpret it, is that we should choose specific shots that are unique to the films.

Given that we have to guess five films, I think it's appropriate that the screenshots should be easier. Not everyone will know a film's title, even from a unique screenshot. And the rules state that to win, you must get all five correct. So, even if you pick four, you still have to wait until the next upload of five screenshots, to help you track down the title of the fifth if you need to.

And even if it gets to the stage where games are being won within a couple of hours, and some players don't get the chance to play, that very speed will ensure that their time will come around soon enough anyway.

Plus, there's the added intrigue of trying to guess which ones another player got right. Lots of good things about this version, IMO.

Anyway, as Mal pointed out, you can use any version you like. But first you have to win one. And that shouldn't be hard for you. :hv20-smilie03:

2010 December 14th, 19:48
Perhaps the tally on each guess (3 right etc.) should be in the rules?

You can't universally apply that, which is why I stated in the rules: "Clues may or may not include which, if any, of the movies have been correctly guessed, at the discretion of the person starting the game."

It all depends on the ease in which the pics are identifiable, and how well the game-master is capable of moving the game along.

Which means the game will be finished too quickly, as the first two ones were...

If you want fast games, (and who doesn't?) this new version is a better way to get them

I meant "fast games" as in new pictures and clues being posted quickly, not that the game should be quickly finished. This round was an example of a game that was NOT fast...

I'm not in here only to win; I'm here to enjoy the game and the sleuthing - I've actually never seen several of the few movies I've guessed correctly.

Yes, I admit that I do enjoy posting a new game just as much as participate in guessing, and have appreciated the chances given me by people forfeiting their turn.

But no, I don't spend hours googling, no time for that, nor is it fun, I've set my self a 5 minutes limit per new screenshot.

But, if others like this version, I'm not opposing, just airing my thoughts.

Most important, though: Keep the games coming in a timely fashion, otherwise people lose interest.

Your turn, Daniel!

I totally agree that it would be great if a new screenshot was posted every few hours. But obviously that would unfairly disadvantage people in different time zones. And if the new shots were too close together, you'd have the same outcome - games would get solved too quickly.

I'm not in here only to win; I'm here to enjoy the game and the sleuthing - I've actually never seen several of the few movies I've guessed correctly.

Ah, that's where we differ, then. I mean, anybody can find out anything by googling, even if they only do it for five minutes. I agree it's kinda fun to get a correct answer by clever observation and cross-referencing and all that, but I prefer a game that relies on my memory and experience of lots of movies. I'd rather win because of my knowledge of movies, not my skill and luck at internet surfing.

Anyway, it's Daniel's turn, so he'll probably give us a version 1 to solve, (where is that boy?!!)

We know you have an incredible memory for movies, and if you've not been googling, I respect your knowledge even more!

Myself, I learn a lot about many movies I haven't seen, by some quick internet surfing...

Anyway, a new game is up now...

Jim E

We know you have an incredible memory for movies, and if you've not been googling, I respect your knowledge even more!

Well... shucks...I wasn't tooting my own trumpet there... well, maybe just a little...:hv20-smilie81:

I do google, but I just don't find it as satisfying. I get a bigger kick out of recognising the scene without having to research. If I have to google it, I feel like I've already lost.

Certainly you can learn about movies you've never seen while you're googling. But you can do that any time, when you're not trying to beat other players to the win.

But, as they say in the classics, whatever floats your boat. :)

Anyway, to the new game!:hv20-smilie77:

Just one last comment: No matter how these games are played, 5 movies or one, fast or slow, some people will always be disadvantaged due to different time zones...
