I know this has been asked already in some form or another...sorry. I have been editing for years in MiniDV DV (Canon GL1) format and I am very familiar with the process.
I have the HV20, FCP 2 6.0.1.
I am able to capture, edit, and burn no problem. What I cannot figure out is why when editing in HDV format, the video will not play back on my HV20, which in turn is connected to a video monitor (so I can see what I am editing). I have tried several scenarios, but no luck. My only options for video play back are "None" or "Cinema Desktop", All the other HDV options are dim and not selectable. It does however work in DV format. Is there an HV20 setting that I am missing (I have tried several), or a FCP setting I am missing (once again I have tried several).
Has anyone else had this problem? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I also could not figure this out until I got help from the apple store in Amsterdam.
You need to use the file/print to video menu item.
According to the manual the other options will not work with HD
Make sure you have the cam connected and turned in PLAY mode before you start FCS2.
Finally you need to set the options to use the right output device for print to video. This is done in Audio-Video settings/AV devices menu.

Thanks for the reply, Still nothing! I tried what you said. Maybe I am missing something. Is there a setting on the hv-20? Please walk me through your settings. Here are mine in the pictures below (click on them to view larger):

Lou,
You cannot view HDV on your HV20 through firewire, this is impossible, not like with DV. That's why you cannot get it to work.
Print to video is just for output.
I suggest going out to a second monitor through your computer. What mac are u using.

Thanks Pelai and w.pasman, So then what is w.pasman referring to.
I am using a PowerBook G4 1.5 ghz. I do have a Sony Bravia 46" XBR LCD HDTV close to my computer desk, I guess I could use that as my preview monitor.
Computer DVI out to the TV's HDMI.

What Pasman is referring to is for your final output of the film you have two choices when going out to tape:
Print to video and edit to tape. If I'm not mistaken, with the HV20 you cannot do edit to tape but print to video (I haven't output anything to tape yet)
If what you want is previewing on an external monitor during editing you would go through your PB DVI to the TV HDMI.
Then you would chose extended desktop in your monitor prefs + in FCP choose that monitor as preview monitor + full screen.
The problem as I see it is not how to have external monitoring with your setup but your Powerbooks old CPU + graphicscard.
I couldn't even watch HDV in my iMac G5 2,1 ghz with 2gigs RAM. If you are editing in your HV20 material converting to SD though you will be fine.

If you print to video, the output appears on the camera display as well.
I'm pretty sure that it will appear on the HDMI and video outputs of the camera as well. But I have not tested that.
This 'print to video' is not for quick previewing though, as it takes quite some time to prepare the video for HDV playback. I use the print to video to record the final cut back to tape. I think this is what apple means with 'native HDV editing'.

Your settings look OK to me. Maybe one of the other settings are wrong, eg the device control sttings.
And did you select a format compatible with the cam? eg 50 if you have a PAL camera?
