I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'm going to give it one more try.

Antman's Short Film Contest #16 - Twist / open genre

Hi!

It seems like we are one contest too early to do a Halloween Special, so for then next contest I am picking "Twist" as the theme, and I am leaving it open genre.

Is it a twist ending? Is it about a twisted ankle? A twisted mind? Doing the twist? Licorice?

Randy

My girlfriend/lead actress will be out of town this weekend. I've got an idea brewing, and will see what I can do about getting it done. It'd involve some night-time out-door shooting, so if I go for it, there will be some challenges/learning in the low-light department!

You need to submit some comments on each entry and select the one you think should win. This needs to be posted within six hours after the contestants' deadline (5:00 PM). So that's by 11:00 PM (PST).

It would be great to have you onboard.

No technical knowledge whatsoever.

Nonsense, I don't think you'd have your production skills without any technical knowledge. You're either being modest or you're yanking my chain.
Besides, even if it were true, I'm sure you could write some comments from a non-technical perspective.

Lawrence189
2010 September 29th, 01:23
Nope I'm not being modest [well maybe slightly, I have some knowledge of course], I'm never really being modest, I'm pretty self aware of my work and what I can do and what I know. [not being defensive just saying] :hv20-smilie03:
As long as I can still enter a submission then I will volunteer to be judge, but a warning: I will only give small details on technical aspects, but I will be very thorough and critical when it comes to creativity/story/acting/etc.
If anyone else wants to take my judge possession let me know [that's if I've been accepted], I'll more then gladly stand down.

For Lawrence and whomeever else... If you want to Judge, and aren't sure if you're putting in an entry, just make your entry non-competitive if you can't find a replacement judge for yourself.

If you want to Judge, and aren't sure if you're putting in an entry, just make your entry non-competitive if you can't find a replacement judge for yourself.

I think Lawrence's dilemma however is that he still wants to compete; just isn't yet sure if he'll be able to or not.

Tell ya what Huey; I'm going to try my best to make this one happen. I always say that I will. But in the end, both you and I know that's not very likely to happen. I'm just too much of a dang procrastinator to get anything done, and while I'd love to say that I've actually participated in a contest before judging one (as to give myself more street cred :hv20-smilie83:), I'm more than willing to take that spot, seeing as the contest ends in a week, and I've yet to so much as prepare a script (meaning nothing's likely to get made).

Should things suddenly change, I'll let you know. But for now, you can go ahead and add me to the list of judges. Hopefully this doesn't bother anyone, and I won't be a cruddy judge. :)

I still haven't got a script. :) I'll do some brainstorming today though.

Yeah but Tim, you're almost always able to come up with something good in a limited amount of time. Whenever I try to conceive a story, write the script, film it and edit it within the span of a week, something ends up being terribly wrong with it; I'm just one of those people who aren't talented enough to come up with something worthwhile on such short notice.

And like I said, I MIGHT still participate, but that'll be a long shot, especially considering that I've still got to finish filming and editing my now non-entry from the last contest. :p

Timbit
2010 October 4th, 08:07
Yeah but Tim, you're almost always able to come up with something good in a limited amount of time.
Well, I wrote a script yesterday and filmed half of it, but I'm not sure if I should keep going on it or start over. The day was sunny and cloudy, and the light kept changing from scene to scene. One clip I set the exposure with the sun filtered by the clouds, and by the time I got to where I was supposed to be and acted though the scene, the sun had come out and blown the highlights a bit. The tools I have for exposure and colour correction won't work very well, I'm surmising. :(

Writing this has made me want to finish it though, so here I go! After my busy day has calmed down, anyway! :p

Timbit
2010 October 5th, 10:21

Vishus

Doesn't have to be a twist ending (but can be). What about twisting the cap off a bottle – What's inside? What about someone twisting around to see what's behind them? What about twisting someone's words around? What about twisting someone's arm? What about twisting the water tap and nothing comes out, and the story behind that?

I do have a short I did last weekend (If its even a short, it's only a test fight scene), but I doubt that would fit. There's a part I was thinking where someone twists another guys arm for a second, but that would be pushing it :l.

My feedback on the entries:

1. My Brother's Keeper by Time White:
The streak is alive! There was some nice framing, which must have been tough since you were filming yourself again. Not sure how much of a twist was involved, since that is kind how Cain treats Able. :) Nice choice of music. I'm not sure what happened with the anti-aliasing for your text at the end. My advice if you decide to go black and white again for the western sort of look, would be to pump up the levels so that the blacks were darker and the whites were lighter, so that there would be more contrast. I like the audible sound you made with your mouth when the gun fires. :)

2. The Watcher by John Lewis:
Looks great! I like the way you shot this tight and with plenty of edits to keep up the frantic/panicked feel. It was well acted, and I liked the soundtrack. Great low-light shots. Sound of the rustling leaves was a little loud in parts as well as the ringing phone, but I'm just being nit-picky since this was a solid production. :) The shutter sound for the camera was missing or too low. Again being picky here. Great job. I also really like your treatment for your titles.

3. Two Deadly Venoms? by Nelson Ortiz.
I had a good chuckle with this one. I know what you were going for, and I think you have succeeded. :) Even if you went for a light-hearted piece, it was still well-edited and I think the fight fit perfect for this, including your choice and timing of sounds effects. Colour-grading might have been over the top, but hey I was entertained watching this!

My choice: My vote goes to The Watcher by John Lewis!

Palmer S.
2010 October 12th, 21:05
Wow. Bit underwhelming this time around, but here we go...

Paperkut-Your video was very well put together. The color correction was nice and warm, and totally fit the old school martial arts film look. The music was a grand fit as well (gotta love Kevin Macleod), and the sound effects had brilliant timing. All that being said, there's no real story here; I would have even preferred some ridiculous dialog followed by fighting, followed by more ridiculous dialog rather than a flat poop joke followed by half a minute of grappling. And the short has only a small relation to the theme. Perhaps if it had ended with him 'twisting' his arm behind his back while he cries out for mercy than the connection would have been more apparent. Overall though, not bad.

Timbit-I like the fake trailer style (though I would have gone with a black backdrop for the title cards, rather than overlays on the video), and got a good chuckle out of the video title alone. However, I just can't see the connection to the theme. I mean...unless it's a twist that he gets shot. And I don't want to be rude, so please don't take offense to this; but I see no significant story anywhere. Guy walks, guy gets shot, title card. It doesn't even work as a parody trailer, because no trailer I've ever seen plays out like that. I'm sorry, but I just feel like there's a lot more potential here...

AJUK-I'll be honest; I didn't get this one at all. It started off really well, with a nice pace, stellar editing, and fairly good cinematography (though I noticed your 550D has some trouble with shadows). But then, when things are at their most tense, the music drops. It becomes silent. The only audio for the rest of the video (minus end credits) is the dialog. That just seemed like an odd choice to me, considering how much the music added to the short up until that point. And I get that it was supposed to be a twist, when we find out he's just a photographer taking photos of birds, but the reveal is seriously lacking for a number of reasons; mainly that the music was gone. And I get what you were going for with the final shot, but I felt the breaking-of-the-fourth wall was a tad excessive.

I hate to say it, but none of the videos really blew me away this time around, and I apologize if I was too harsh on anyone; you've all gone above and beyond what I did (considering I couldn't even finish the script for my entry), but not one of the videos managed to click with me.

Seeing as I have to pick a winner, my vote goes to Paperkut. Looks like we have a tiebreaker...come on Sunday Cracker!

paperkut12
2010 October 12th, 21:14

Very nicely done. I particularly liked the jump cuts, and the tone. Although, maybe I missed this, what were the woman and her kids running from?

3) Two Deadly Venoms? by Nelson Ortiz.
Haha what did I just watch? I loved the sound effects! You're nuts, man!

I'm going for The Watcher by John Lewis on this one!

AH you made it!
Thank you for posting.

So there we have it.
Congrats AJUK, a well deserved win, IMHO.

And on that note I'll stand down.
My moderator permissions have been removed, so I guess I wont be hosting from now on.

My sincerest gratitude to everyone who contributed, since I've been hosting. I hope the contest continues, best of luck everyone.

Thanks for the votes and the feedback guys. I think Palmer definitely spotted the tell tale signs of my struggle to get my entry done in time! I definitely need more than two weekends to get a short planned, shot, edited, synced and graded! :)

I'm definitely sorry to hear that Huey is standing down as competition mod, and I like to mention that I think he's done a great job of trying to keep things going and deal with the naysayers and the lack of entrants. Here's hoping that the competition can continue in some form.

congratulations, AJUK! I would have watched your entry, but my computer kept freezing... :(

So who's leading the contests now?

Vishus
2010 October 13th, 09:02
The next contest is the Halloween contest http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?39235-Vishus-Halloween-Short-Film-Contest-2010

Then once that is wrapped, we're back in for our next round of Antman's contest, with a Theme Chosen by AJUK.

The Halloween Contest has slightly different rules, and a prize pack for the winner! Please help spread the word so that we can get more entries!

Daniel Rutter
2010 October 13th, 09:06
Vishus, what is the prize pack for that entry?

Timbit

It's in the rules.

Thanks for picking up the contest and running it for us Huey, I'm sure we all greatly appreciated the effort you put into it. :)

I'm thinking about entering your contest Vishus, though no though. Until then, I'll be working on my entry from two contest ago (yes, I've seriously yet to finish that...been so busy :hv20-smilie126:), so it would be an honor if you guys could keep an eye out for that, and give me some feedback! It's my first short shot on SLR, so I'll need all the extra advice I can get...

Till next time my friends. :hv20-smilie24:

Yes, you can enter AJUK... but I would really suggest you enter it as a 'non-competitive entry' to make it fair on the others. If you could PM me with your theme and genre for the next contest, I'll make sure it's ready to go once the Halloween contest comes to a close.

This is one opportunity to give everybody more time and at the same time allow AJUK to enter the competition.

Would it be fair to allow AJUK to win the the next contest if he was the one who suggested the the theme? I think not.

What the 'eff are you talking about, Daniel? Now YOU'RE the one who's trying to change the rules. That's one of the things you nagged the butt off me about.

So you're saying that if you win, you'll be disqualified from entering the next one?

Daniel Rutter
2010 October 15th, 06:40
When did I say anything about being disqualified? I said 'non competitive entry'... not the same as being disqualified.

I appreciate you're trying to steer me in the right direction with running this contest Huey, but why not have a little faith... and let me try it myself? The biggest problem with this contest and previous 'helmers' is that they let everyone else tell them how to run it. If I'm to run this contest, I'll run it my own way... as close to the way Antman intended it to be when we started.
Let me have a go at it my way.

When I receive the next contest theme from AJUK, I'll decide then whether to release it straight away. As for AJUK entering, that is up to him.

Vishus
2010 October 15th, 06:43
Please hold off on releasing the next theme until after the Halloween Competition is done. I would like to get as many people involved in that one as possible.

Daniel, I get what you are thinking about the the "Theme chooser" also being an entrant. They potentially get more time to think about their concept for the next round than the others. However, except in this case where there Halloween contest is in between, no one knows that they are going to be the winner UNTIL it is their time to choose their next subject. Personally, I think it's great that the winners get to choose AND work on the next theme. Also, we are not steeped in entries, so I think we could use all the entries we can get for now. :)

That was my plan. In fact, I was thinking of releasing it a few days before your deadline (say... the 23rd?) to give people a few days to decide on their entry for this contest, whilst finishing up on your contest. Still, I would like to know what the next contest theme is... just for the sake of knowing.

It's never been enforced in the past, and if one entrant wins twice in a row (like Playing did), I've yet to see a three-in-a-row. :)

Wouldn't you want to encourage regular-quality entrants?

'NON COMPETITIVE ENTRIES?
Give me an effin break, who the F would go to the trouble of putting heart and soul into a project (in such a tight timeframe) if their work is to be considered non-legit from the get go?

Yeah Daniel, I think we need to let AJUK enter, even if he decides the theme. Everyone else who's ever decided the entry has been allowed to put a competitive entry forth, while would we suddenly change it now? It doesn't seem fair...

And I'm not trying to tell you how to run it; run it however you'd like. Just don't change what's already been in the rules since day one.

What do you mean, what's already been in the rules? There is nothing about non-competitive entries in the rules, but there will be soon.

I stand by what I said, AJUK can feel free to enter, but his entry will be considered 'non-competitive'.

In other news, I'll be looking for two extra judges to stand up for the next contest.

2010 October 15th, 23:49
Yeah, I'm with everyone saying AJUK should be able to enter as is. Why sacrifice a potential entry when at times we've only had 2 or so? Do the right thing Daniel!

2010 October 15th, 23:52
Sorry Daniel. But I think the rules have always been clear that the winner IS allowed to enter as a COMPETITIVE entry. I see no harm in it. I mean I actually see that as the "prize" for the contest, you're given the advantage. and I would not like to see any of the rules change except for the ocassional deadline in case of inconvenience. but that is my two cents. still think your awesome man haha

Really?
You're not going to consider what other people feel about this?
Not even a round of ays and nays?
I guess you don't care.

AJUK, was a good contributor. Too bad you see the need to marginalize him. He's an advocate of the four-week timeframe, so now he has a double disincentive for entering the next one.

Daniel Rutter
2010 October 16th, 00:10
I stand by what I said, AJUK can feel free to enter, but his entry will be considered 'non-competitive'.
That is my last input in this matter.

The lack of entries has nothing to do with not allowing previous winners to enter. I'm not saying that all previous winners of every contest cannot have the chance to win... I'm saying that the person who won the previous weeks contest, and chose the entry, cannot have his entry (should he choose to enter) considered a potential winner.

The prize in this contest, is having constructive criticism given to you and allowing you to learn from this. The original point of this contest, was to teach you all how to churn out something in a short amount of time. Nothing about the timing of the contest will change, it will stay the same. The only thing that's changing, is who is running it.

If anyone brings this up again, I'm locking the thread. By rights, this should be in the general discussions thread anyway.

What's naive about it? There's nothing stopping him, except a rule change. That's life Huey, it's all about rules. And don't give me that crap about 'rules can be bent'. That's the problem with this contest, it's rules have been bent so much that they break. Changing the length of the contest is wrong, it ruins the original idea of this contest. Allowing a contributor to win the contest two times in a row is just plain unfair.

I have some ideas to bring more people into this contest, all I need is a team of people who are willing to help out. I don't feel that's to much to ask.

Alright, I'm going to lock this thread. Anyone who is interested in being apart of the team to run this contest, please contact me via PM.
