Hello HV20 fans,

I just got my HV20 a few days ago and this is also my first camcorder, so my apologies if the questions seem a little basic, but I'm stuck trying to transfer footage to my computer. The situation is as follows:

I'm using iMovie 6.0.3, the camera is connected with firewire. I have recorded footage in HDV 24p and want to transfer it as DV widescreen first. Editing HDV is very processor intensive and I want to keep the tape to work on it in HDV once I get a faster machine.

The camera is a Japanese NTSC version of the HV20.

What confuses me at the moment is how to set the camera and iMovie to transfer the movie. The settings in iMovie seem to be more determined by the camera than by what I set in iMovie and sometimes arbitrary. Here is what happens:

Settings:
playback1:
- playback std A or HDV
- TV type 16:9
playback 2:
- comp out 1080i
- DV output HDV/DV
iMovie:
- creating DV project, opens 4:3 format and pops up problem about camera sending half size pictures (it is not in long play)
- creating DV widescreen, HDV 1080i and HDV 720p project records HD-1080i-30 - against the specified standard in two cases (!).

playback1:
- playback std DV
- TV type 16:9
playback 2:
- comp out 1080i or 480i
- DV output HDV/DV or DV locked
iMovie:
- creating DV project, opens DV-PAL project recording is 4:3 squashed.
- creating DV widescreen, HDV 1080i, HDV720p project, opens DV-NTSC widescreen 4:3 pillarboxed, recording: camera plays back but screen blue and no recording, camera displays "playback STD locked, playback is restricted"

playback1:
- playback std HDV
- TV type 16:9
playback 2:
- comp out 1080i
- DV output DV locked
iMovie:
- creating DV project, creates 4:3 squashed DV-NTSC.
- creating DV widescreen project, creates 4:3 pillarboxed squashed DV-NTSC.
- creating HDV 1080i or 720p yields 4:3 pillarboxed squashed DV-NTSC.

playback1:
- playback std A
- TV type 16:9
playback 2:
- comp out 480i
- DV output HDV/DV
iMovie:
- creating DV project, yields 4:3 squashed DV-PAL.
- creating DV widescreen project, yields pillarboxed 4:3 DV-NTSC

I've also observed how when the firewire cable is plugged in "play/out setup2" "DV output" is grayed and "---" is displayed as the selected option, unplugging enables the choice of output. Is this because the computer tells the camera how to format the output. If so how can I set this with iMovie.

In conclusion iMovie seems to flip arbitrarily between PAL and NTSC and entirely refuses to output a correct 16:9 widescreen unless I stay in HDV.

Can anyone shed some light in what is going here or point me to an article that explains it. Ideally I would like to convert the 24p into 25p PAL without pulldown (speeding it up by 4%) - but how to tell iMovie to do that?
I realize from reading the forum that the 'no pulldown' issue is big and well discussed, but I'm sorry to say that I'm still confused. Is there a summary or work-through somewhere that I may have missed.

Many thanks in advance for helping out a newbie.
