Slow to focus?

First off I want to thank all that have posted on here and made my last 2 nights at work fly by. But I just wanted to see if anybody else seems to have a problem with the focus. It seems to take about 1-2 seconds to focus on objects/faces. I have the Instant Auto Focus on. I am shooting in 24p mode only, and occasionally in Cinemode. Are there any tricks or do I just have to wait a few seconds to clearly see my children??

What was the lighting like? Any camera will struggle in low light.. but with I.AF in daylight outdoors I've been amazed how quickly the focus changes. Pretty much instantly usually.

I have had some trouble focusing on objects that are very close.. I.e, I put my finger about 1cm from the lense and it focused very quickly but I tried the same thing with a buttercup and it struggled to focus even at about 5-10cm.. that may be because it was blowing around in the wind a bit so was confusing the focus?

Also I think the contrast difference will have an impact.. focusing on a white wall is all but impossible.. but going from something dark coloured to something light helps the focus out.
