If I buy an HV20 from a USA or Japanese source and take it to the UK, will Canon UK honour the warranty or will they say it has to be sent back to wherever it came from?
Any ideas based on theory or practice welcome!

Definitely not. I have owned at least 15 different Canon's over the years and this is something Canon emphasizes emphatically.

In the UK, the law is on your side, thanks to a recent court ruling. Buy with your credit card because the card company will have to pay up if there is any problem with the camera. Purchase value of the item must be over £100, and can be purchased ANYWHERE in the world.
Regardless of what Canon says, you are covered.

Ah. Sadly I didn't pay for this with my credit card.
