I wouldn't want to try to cut together a conversation from an OTS shot with each camera: the vast differences in sensitivity and sensor size would be tough to match.

But short of that, sure; why not? Adobe CS5 and other NLEs support .R3Ds natively now, or you can use one of RED's free software tools to set white balance and convert the files to something you can drop in your timeline like ProResHQ444.

I worked on a small project last year which shot primarily on an XH-A1 with Brevis adapter, but which also used HV20s for inserts, POV shots, etc. There was one big night exterior where we worried we couldn't bring enough light to the party, so a RED One was rented (with Nikon mount, so we could use the same manual stills lenses we used on the Brevis).

I'm told the footage turned out great, and would've cut unnoticeably with surrounding A1 and HV clips; however, I can't (yet) provide a link as proof — it seems an over-worked and under-organized member of the editorial team misplaced or over-wrote both the primary download drive and the backup for those shots ... unless one or the other turns up soon, it will mean a re-shoot ... of the only big night exterior ... with the only big stunt in the whole show ... :hv20-smilie119:

The difference in sensitivity actually compensates for the sensor size to some extent, as you need to open the aperture more with HVXX than with red. The DOF of HV at open aperture f1.8-XX more or less matches Red at f11 or so - this will rarely be the case in real life, there will be a DOF difference, but not necessarily as big as one would think intuitively. On the examples above, we had a white BG, so the DOF difference isn't that noticeable (i don't remember the f-stops on our shoot - i didn't have ND on HV, so it probably wasn't full aperture).

Also, if you wish to match the two closer, you can shoot windowed 2K with red - this will bring them much closer together from the getgo.
