View Full Version : Favourite settings?

Had my camera a couple of weeks now and I must say I love it. I haven't really worked through all the manual settings but in some I don't seem to notice all that much difference. The instant auto focus for example compared to normal etc. I read in another forum about this camera, people listing their favourite settings for everyday pick up and shoot situations, one guy liked a minus one on the low sharpening for example. I guess I'm being lazy in not trying various combinations but wondered if anyone had any presets that they would like to share for either general use or specific situations.
Don't take too long as I head off for a four month trip in a couple of weeks and I'd like to be able to use the camera to it's maximum potential. Hope I'll have enough time to practice before I go!!!!!!!

I also would like to see what settings people are using. I just use everything on auto myself for now. I hear a lot about 24p in cine mode but I don't see what everybody who uses it likes about it. The picture is jerky to me. I must be doing something wrong cause some of the video I have seen looks pretty good in 24P. For now I will keep reading what these guys who are in the know
are doing with this camera and maybe learn something.

Just curious. How many tapes are you packing for your four month round the world trip? I would probably consider needing at least one or two tapes a day.

Brandy - the easiest way to see what effects the various image settings have is to hook your camera directly to a TV and then run through the settings.
That being said, I've pretty much settled (after much testing) on the following:
I always shoot 24p (that's the only reason I bought this camera)
TV mode, shutter 1/48
custom settings: color depth -1, 0 or +1 (depending on what I'm shooting), contrast -1, brightness -1, sharpness 0

Bluegrass. Probably10-15 tapes. No it's not a trip round the world. We live in the south of Australia which can get pretty damn cold for the next three or four months so we hop into our caravan and head up into the tropics until winters over. Last year we drove right round Australia (22,000km) in five months and I only used 12 tapes. Mind you we do slide shows too and had over 3000 6MP photos to select from!!
Peter, thanks for the settings will try later today, good idea to hook up to the TV, mine happens to be close to a window where I can also get onto our balcony for some nice ocean views. Can see I'm going to be in for a busy day!!

for indoors, my custom settings are 0 for everything except +1 for brightness.

Very nice site David. Couldn't get some to open, ie the hands under weddings and the one left of the Ferris wheel in trips.

Brandy, thanks for the compliments! Strange, however, regarding the pics because they're loading rather quickly here (even after clearing my cache). Maybe I should reduce the picture filesize further.
BTW, anybody know how to reduce the built-in flash intensity or changing the ISO setting in still camera mode?

I've just received mine so I can't offer any suggestions but I have a couple of questions.
Firstly I want to capture as close to film as possible, 25p 1/50 shutter (I'm in UK) and as little gain as possible (0 I hope).
But beyond that what's the point in Brightness colour and the rest? Aren't they all applied to the image after it's captures? If so then it isn't anything you could do just as well in post is it?
Am I missing something there? Also going back that film look any tips on controlling these settings? I read Barry Greens article on DVXUser about this but would be interested in other peoples Ideas.

I like shooting in 24p with a 2.4 apature and 840 shutter speed it's a little dark but theirs absolutley no motion blurs or ghosting. nice clean edges

Yes you can.
Would you kindly explain how to get that?

well you got to apature mode and change it from 1.8 to 2.4 then go the exposer and change it to -7 that cause the shutter to goo to 840.
but it's kinda tricky you have to play around with it by pointing the camera at different light sources and then changing the exp untill your max exposer is -7. I hope that a coherent explaination...

Thank you. I got that. But what I meant it to actually set the camera to actual Cinemode, not workaround (I've used your method and it's not feasible for day-to-day spontaneous recording). :hv20-smilie31:

Would you kindly explain how to get that?Sorry I thought it would be pretty much straight forward. All you have to do is...once you are in cinemode:
1.press the function button and scroll all the way down to where it says "menu'
2.Press the joystick in and another screen comes up
3. scroll down once witht the joystick untill you see "REC/IN SETUP
4. Scroll to the right side on to where it says "HD STANDARD'
5. Press the joystick and all your options will show
6. Choose "HDV"
7. Press joustick and a questin will come up saying "SWITCH SYSTEM"
8. Scroll to "YES" and walla...your there...still in Cinemode but now in 60i.
HDV = 60i
HDV (PF24) = 24p
I hope I explained this right.

Frankly...I am glad we are able to get to Cinemode at 60i also. It is needed if there are slow motion scenes where I have to shoot in 60i first. I'm glad Canon did not leave that option out.:hv20-smilie70:
