View Full Version : Antman's Short Film Contest #6 - Feelings / drama
Shigeta
2010 May 10th, 00:09
Theme: FEELINGS
Genre : Drama
Interpretation of feelings is wide, whatever the film maker wants to do with it (bounds of good taste must apply, language should not be offensive). Lighting, actors ability to "emote", cinematography to complement mood, and even music can all add to some very good entries.
This will be even more of a challenge to those who really hope to emulate hard hitting action, that sort of thing. But the themes we don't hold as our favorite types do present a heckuva challenge and that is what makes us grow.
My biggest challenge will be finding female acting talent if my story (and I have nothing in mind right now) calls for some. I have access to 2-4 good male actors, so I'm going to try to come up with an entry too.
Music...For those who don't buy royalty free like SmartSound, there is an excellent free to download, free to use collection of music at www.incompetech.com
You can, of course, send small donations to him by paypal, but all Kevin asks is that you credit him for anything you use. He has quite a variety and his terms of use are about the most generous you'll find. Even far less restrictive than "creative commons".
Let's roll...
-Bruce Foreman
Two weeks from the deadline for "Cops" is May 23rd.
So the DEADLINE for this one is Sunday May 23rd at 6PM Eastern time. (If I have it right).

Hmm... So, there's no limit on these... feelings? There could be some interesting takes on this. I may even enter this one.
Can someone please explain the 'feelings' theme a bit? I don't quiet understand...

Feelings (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/feelings): Anything that require an emotion : crying, laughing or being angry... and it applies in any situation i guess.

I'm kinda stumped on the feelings things too. Does it have too be essentially about feelings or can it be about a character that has certain types of feeling/emotion(i.e Mad). I mean I like the idea but I'm having ideas and I'm not sure if they would fit to the theme.:hv20-smilie51:

Use your ideas. How you tie the character and the character's "feelings" together is entirely up to you.
Hit the viewer in the face with it.
Good call Bruce! If people apply themselves to this, there is potential for some amazing stuff!
Thanks a bunch. You definitely get it.
Now, if I can just produce one on this one I'll turn cartwheels.
This is a very creative crowd, surely we'll see some really good ones if people will take the challenge.
Check out the one just about to start over on dvinfo.net. This one is going to be to produce a trailer or promotion on an instructional, documentary, event, sport or something of that nature. That much we know before signing up (tossing one's spear into the sand), and on the 13th some "requirement" we must meet will be announced.
One month to finish.
Here's the announcement:
http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/dv-challenge-our-semi-regular-contest/477957-dvc-18-sign-up-thread.html
To compete you must register on their site (REAL NAME required) and sign up in that thread. I think I'm gonna jump in that one too. See if I can make an exciting "shooting sports" video.

2010 May 16th, 14:23
Mike... get yourself Handbrake... that way you can render a high quality version (Out of your NLE) and then re-compress it (and select a desirable filesize) into Mp4 for upload :)
Just came dragging in at 1:00AM from shooting. Had to make do with only part of the cast I wanted, so we shot what we could. Still have a day or two to try and find another cast member and finish up with the original concept.
If not I'll edit what I've got and put something together.
I'm glad we seem to have some life going in this contest, turns out the theme and genre weren't as restrictive as some were worried about. My "take" on these things, is take the theme, see what you can make of it and don't worry about the "theme police".
Have fun.
Shigeta,
Are you getting some judges lined up? I don't remember if I get to determine how this one will be judged but if I have any say, I opt for a panel of judges like we tried to do a couple of contests back.
It looks like we'll have a few entries.

Anyway, I finally got mine to properly export through compressor and uploaded it to the group yesterday afternoon. However, it hasn't been approved yet, I guess, cause it's not showing up in the group.

If you're like most of us you will be far more critical of your own efforts than most others will be. Deadline is Sunday 6P East Coast time as I understand it.
If we're at all serious about this thing, at some time we all have to step in front of the camera to get something done.
Most viewers will not apply the same standards to what they see as you will.

Well, had it done. Shot some more yesterday evening. Someone found us a gal who was willing to act and the entry will have a bit more meaning with that part filled out.
I finished editing about 3AM, all it lacked was some fine tuning, did a quick save and headed for the rack. Don't know what happened, maybe the save was too quick...
...It's GONE.
Poof
Gone.
Well, the original camera files are still there so I get to do the edit all over again. I'll try to start tonight, tomorrow afternoon and evening I have a Defensive Handgun class to teach so maybe a little "trigger time" demonstrating will ease the "gnashing of teeth" and "rending of hair" feelings (hey...maybe that's what I should film).

My film so far is non stop cheesy metaphors, I'm considering not submitting it but I hate not being a participant. If I do, those who laugh will vanish. (-:
Submit it and make no excuses or apologies. "Cheesy metaphors" can have real entertainment value and you have no way of telling how many of us will enjoy, be entertained, and yes...Laugh.
So what? This is how we learn.
I'm not real happy with mine, but I'll be damned if I'll "not submit".
Re-editing went fine last night. Just need to add a few things, confirm names of cast (for credits...I always insure my crew gets credited), and will be uploading in a day or so (I hope).
Tip: for anyone using cameras that produce MTS files, look into Koyote Soft's free video converter. Even my Core i7 (Using Pinnacle Studio 12.1) has been "choking" on AVC H.264 files, but using that converter to convert them to MP4 1920x1080 with a bitrate of 9000Kbps has allowed Studio 12.1 to edit smooth as butter even with 2nd video track "cutaways" and transitions.
Wish I'd discovered this a long time ago.
Good luck with your entries, folks.
I know & understand you Bruce, same happened to me on another one, but it was my external HDD that just died on me...with everything saved on it.

I hope the "learning" from that experience caused you to go out and replace that external with a "pair" of externals. That's what I do and while I'm working on a project I actually have the camera files, at least, on 3 hard drives. The pair of externals I keep hooked up (but not powered up unless I need them) and the internal drive on the computer
I hope you were able to recover somewhat from that.
Don't wish the dying of hard drives on me... PLEASE!
NEVER...
...I don't wish that on anybody (Well, anybody friendly, at least).
Just make sure you have everything saved on at least 2 hard drives.

As for the Rode, I took it out to the rifle range a few weeks ago and I think the loudness of the gunfire ruptured the diaphragm or something...

Slightly off topic, has anyone heard from Antman? Haven't seen him pop in for the last few contests.
Last time i heard from him was a month and a half ago, i think he was releasing his movie on the early of May.
He might have been busy with the final details i think.
As for the Rode, I took it out to the rifle range a few weeks ago and I think the loudness of the gunfire ruptured the diaphragm or something...
If you were under a typical "canopy" or metal roofing often found over the firing positions, the echo effect will magnify the rifle report which in some calibers starts out super loud, and the sound pressure level could easily harm a condenser mic's diaphragm.
I've had my Rode SVM out to our gun club range but mostly in the pistol area and not while anyone was firing .44 magnum or .454 Casull. I try never to get under a canopy with it. I don't like to take my ears under a canopy even with earmuffs.
Sorry about your mic.
On another note...I should be uploading my entry tonight or tomorrow. It needs a little more editing but I'm running a test render right now to see if my file conversion affects final results.
...I should be uploading my entry tonight or tomorrow. It needs a little more editing but I'm running a test render right now to see if my file conversion affects final results.
Major disaster!
test render looks great. Was just about to start trying to upload when I got a phone call from my lead actor, woman who played the female role in the project is upset, wants out. Parents, ex husband, and brother telling her she's going to wind up in porn film. She believes it.
So she's out. All scenes with her have been deleted from the timeline and a drastic re-edit is underway.
Where do people get these ideas anyway?
HueyNRolf
2010 May 22nd, 01:09
Bif, That sucks!
Without knowing the exact circumstances I'd say to hell with her and go ahead. What's she going to do?
I had a simular experience where I was asked to take down some live music performances because the one of the singers had split and didn't want his image on any of the bands promotions. Ehem, well excuse me but LOGOS and I shot those for free to get some demo reel material. I just ignored the guy and those vids are still on my Vimeo page.

Parents, ex husband, and brother telling her she's going to wind up in porn film. She believes it.
Damn...no chance to replace her with another actress before sunday (as the whole editing was mostly done)?
Could you change the female by a male lead actor instead? if it fits the story/if you have somebody to take the role...
I'd make sure to write her something and add the link to your video when you're done...so she'll know she've been wrong to leave, but that's me.
...a phone call from my lead actor, woman who played the female role in the project is upset, wants out.
Has she seen the final footage? If you send her the final edit (with her scenes still intact) she might change her minds.
It happens sometimes, when the inexperienced actor gets cold feet, as they don't know what the final product will look like.
Once they see it though, they might feel proud and change their mind.
If you already have the edited version, it can't hurt. to show it to her, if she hasn't seen it yet.
Oh, and do you already have the signed release forms? Legally, that's all it would come down to anyway...

Sorry to hear that Bruce! I'm very curious now about your project. I know you can't tell us until after Sunday, but I'd love to know what your original take was, that these guys think filming for a PG-13 contest on a message board will lead to porn.

I was just looking at my entry, and I realized that the audio (While crap) actually came out a lot quieter than it should have. Just a warning to those who watch it, Turn up your speakers a little bit.
EDIT: By my watch, Deadline has passed...
My entry was uploaded after a fairly extensive re-edit using some "takes" I hadn't used in the first edit to fill in needed timeline. My lead actor (and the others he's recruited for other projects) have all appreciated the opportunity to work in my projects so the only time I got releases was when I submitted a couple of videos to the "VideoMaker" Annual Canon contest.
I don't have a release, she never saw an edit, and her "family" obviously has no "clue". Even if she and "they" relented I would not take a chance so I "dumped" what I had.
To be honest, I think it actually looks and flows better now.
It's why they call these things "challenges"

If this venue works the way some others do, and people will refrain from "cutting" critiques (like most do) the suggestions you get on how to improve what you've done are like "free film school".
Don't pass that up.
You've seen my style in judging comments, mention things done well or done right and then ways to make the "weak" points better without calling them weak points. I go easy and I think others do too.

Soul Survivor
Good:
Very nice score and well utilized in the edit to add drama and suspense. The shots and the edits worked well together. I really liked the hands slapping on the window, creepy without being cheesy.
Not so good:
The closing scene looked rushed, the guy who came down the steps seemed to mumble his lines, in fact I had to go back a few times just to pick up what he was saying. Might be just me, but that was a struggle. The SNR here is poor too and there's no ambient track to smooth it out, so it jumps a bit.
Memories
Good:
Camera work and editing, use of the score for dramatic timing. The flashback of the dead girl, was nicely done. And I thought the acting was good too
Not so good:
The location audio could've been mixed a bit better. The floleys of the items on the table are a bit loud and the telephone call a bit low and there's a hum in it.
The story is a bit hard to follow. Presumably he killed the girl in the flashback, but why? Then he tops himself, but why?
Unforgetable
Good:
A creative approach to the contest. Why not go music vid style? I liked the talent, he works well here. The loan sharks window is another nice touch. The color work is a little inconsistent, but overall it looks good.
Not so good:
The audio on the song is a bit noisy and hot, might have been better to have him sync to a better recording of the song. The audio on the scene where he gets moved on at the end is a real deal breaker.
Everyone Feels
Good:
The shooting, the score and the editing are very nice. I really liked that shot of the stove with the burners going on and off.
Not so good:
Doesn't make a point and those titles along the bottom are too fast and flaky.
Busted
Good:
An amusing story. The cop was very convincing and I liked the camera work, was it really handheld?
Not so good:
In a word audio. The foley at the beginning is blown and the rest of it is dogged with inconsistent ambience and nasty wind rumble.
My vote
Was very nearly busted, but after a second look I'm going with Memories, this one is the best all rounder, good job Daniel.

Busted was Bruce Video from the last theme, for cops...i don't know if he used the same for this one or if Shigeta just forgot to remove it...
But Daniel's video was the best. Good work kid!:hv20-smilie72:

Understood.
So if Busted, my close second choice, is out of the running, then Memories, is the clear winner as far as my vote goes.
So what now?
Is there a third judge?

We should ask Shigeta for this...i'd say if anybody else is available, then just let Daniel choose the next theme and the show goes on again...

If it's a three-judge decision, then a third is redundant, since Daniel already has two votes.
This being the case then he should be declared the winner.
Of course, I'm sure everyone would appreciate a write up from Shigs, but just out of interest.

Well guys, I'm honored. Really... thanks a bunch :)
HueyNRolf: About the sound... I've probably mentioned it a million times now, but in case you missed it: My Rode, for some reason, won't stay at a certain volume anymore (it changes before it captures). So thats why some of the sound is really bad. This really was a dealbreaker for me as well, but I felt that it was necessary to enter this comp with what I had anyway (just as well I did!).
Thanks to all the fair reviews guys, I know what I now need to work on. I've got a great suggestion for the next contest theme... but I'll wait for Shig to contact me about that (is that what he does?).
Thanks again guys :)

Nice job on the entries guys! I think Soul Survivor was my favourite, but I agree with HnR, I had to go back and hear what he said at the end, which was a shame since him saying 'death' was the payoff.
Daniel, good job. Your flashback was shot well. I think you could have shortened it a bit.
Bruce: It's too bad you lost your actress' permission. I could have seen that being a lot more powerful had you been able to keep her parts in. The part at the end wit the "move along" bit didn't fit. It might have made more sense in your original context?
Lawrence, as was mentioned, no story, but some good editing for sure! Love that piece of music. Listening to it made me want to shoot something for it!
Looking forward to seeing what comes next!

I've sent Shigeta my idea for the next theme... I'll let you guys wait until Shig puts that up...
Next one should really get those juices flowing :)
Congrats, Daniel.
Now, don't ever sell your acting short again. I think you did very well.

New theme please! I'm definitely joining the next one. Also, Daniel I liked your submission the best; all good films though.

Well I'm waiting for Shigeta to put it up... but if he doesn't do it by the end of the day, I will.
Thanks Paperkut (good song by the way, I'm a Linkin Park fan myself)...

Who decides the new theme?
This contest is like totally cobabled. I see someone took my idea and made a footage page. Now we need a discussion page a rules page.
Shig!!!

Well... I've been thinking that the Film Archive thread was needed from the start, and both you and Mal agreed.
I've already sent my suggestion of the next theme to Shig, but he's taking his time getting it up here. Wake up Shig! We film makers need all the time we can get to get our entries done!!!

It does seem a bit disorganized of late.
It should be made clear about deciding the winner too, is it a poll, judges or whatever?
People need to know this before they enter.

Let's wait a complete week and post the upcoming theme next monday?
Because if Shig waits till the end of the week to post it, it won't be a complete two week contest...
Huey : Shig is suppose to put some order in this contest, it's up to him now...
Edit: Nevermind, Shig already started the next one. We'll discuss this in that other thread (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=36384).

Already posted. We can move the deadline up 2 days, but last time we discussed this, it was decided that the contest would be simply short of 2 weeks.

I've noticed this when going through all the old threads looking for the videos. This contest needs a complete redesign! We need a solid way of deciding the winner, and a selected panel of Judges for the contest.
Personally, I reckon the best of the best on the forum (Those who are professionals, like Huey, Antman, Erik and even CG) should be the judges, and then we should have a people's choice. But of course, in order to do this... we need more entrants.
I can help redesign the contest if you wish.. I'm not doing much else as of late.

Antman has not been active for a month, so we must not count on him as a job

1) Yep, so it's now or never, public poll or judges?
2) Huey for sure, antman's too busy and CG if he's up to of course.
Another volunteer? I'd suggest Bif as always or Janke. Both are experienced guys with plenty of good and constructive/helpfull criticisms.
Daniel Rutter
2010 May 25th, 20:41
Well I suggest Janke, as he's been making films for years (according to his website)... and Bif I find is more valuable in the Entrants area (But is great as a judge as well).
And Antman was just a suggestion. This was his brainchild after all.
I say both Public poll and Judges choice. The one who gets the judges choice, gets to choose the next theme... The people's choice can get that little award thingy under their name or something...
