Time to get our thinking caps on! This could be a lot of fun. I am hoping to see a bunch of entries.
Is this going to be a judged round or a community vote round?
KingDucky

I like the community one better.

How long do you think people should get to vote on a winner?

How long do you think people should get to vote on a winner?
I'd say, from the deadline (sunday 6pm) i'd give 24hours : so the poll should close on Monday 6pm and then the winner could be announced. As far as i remmember, in the ShortShort 3 contest, koolpenguin89 had to remove some votes from the poll because they weren't "legal" : multiples voters from the same i.p. adress or something like that. So, what do you prefer?
I'd personally stick with judges: i think at least Bif & HueyNRolf were the best and if they're up to do it again in the upcomming contests, i'd be glad to have them judging the shorts.
my opinion : keep a judge pannel with a winner announced on Monday 6pm.

You could set up the camera, then throw a stone at a police station window and let the cops run after you. That would be very funny :)

Funny, I was just thinking about how much fun it would be to do a Police Squad remake or homage. This could be fun.

Cop comedies :(
Got out and shot some on this today. Where on vimeo do we upload our submissions to?
Should I be needed to judge again, mine will be a non competitive entry.

Here (http://vimeo.com/groups/hdshorts/videos) Bruce. [the videos will be replaced by Shigeta on the deadline]
Personally i'd like you to be one of the judges, but if you shot something, i'd like even more you to be one of the members in the competition!

There's at least two people interested to help me this time, two buddy from the job.
If everything goes as planned, we should shoot this on Thursday. We'll see then!
Good luck! One of the "enticements" I use is that everybody who works with me on a project gets a DVD playable copy with their name in the credits and even though it will have a copyright notice they have permission (written on the DVD jacket label) to make any copies they need in support of their own "self promotion" efforts.
My actors had a lot of fun with this one.

How come there was no "due date" posted by the originator of this? I see somewhere earlier in the thread, someone said Sunday was the deadline... however, someone else is saying they're going to shoot tomorrow? :hv20-smilie50:

I think that the deadline is this sunday (the 9th) at 6pm EST? Can someone please confirm this time. In the future, it would be nice to clearly label the deadline in the opening post, as it can be quite confusing to figure out the due-date sometimes!

Also, is there any way we could put together some links to past contests and winners? Currently the only available videos on the Vimeo page are the ones for the current contest.

I'm interested in doing a short for this contest, but I think it would help if the genre was left open and it just being a theme. Just a thought to help.

I agree, I wanted to do something for this contest and had time, but the Cop Comedy was too restricting for me to be able to pull anything together. I think it needs to be much more open at least initially. For example, I like the idea of providing say 10 different items or story elements and then you have to pick 5 or so to put into your film. This allows a lot of creativity in the story while still making sure the films were made for this specific contest.

They did that in the last HD short contest, moderated by Koolpenguin89 (Dylan). Was great, gave three different object/action that had to be in the short, maximum 60 seconds. Ended up with great stuff...
Let's wait on Shig's opinion...

Let's do one more. It's only fair to Bif, who one.

I didn't know what the heck I was going to do with it either, but "restricting" starts to fall apart fast when you really start thinking. I saw one 5 or 7 min short with 2 detectives (uniforms are hard for a lot of us to manage) and a bunch of "donut" sight gags just a few days ago.
All kinds of cop comedy possibilities, Barney Fife type who gets ONE BULLET, the Andy Griffith show used that one for years. A badge on the belt and a guy who can't hang onto a gun...
Lotsa things. Mine really called for a uniformed cop, so we went with a "cheapie" badge, not quite matched khaki shirt and pants, a rubber .45 and stuff on a belt, and turned my son-in-law into a "redneck" county "mountie"; and I could have obsessed over not having a "rigged" cop car. We used my wife's Buick Century and just "did it".
OK...What's restrictive about FEELINGS (wide open, remember?) and DRAMA.
Does that shut out any action?
...No....
Does it shut out any inclination to...Say...SciFi?
...No...
Sensuality?
....Well, in good taste and not offensive should be OK...
Drama is actually a very wide, sweeping genre....Lends itself to just about every aspect of life.
I selected a theme and genre that is practically wide WIDE OPEN, the film maker can make darn near anything they want out of it.
No restrictions on creativity...Find a "feeling" and start working with it.
Joy, Anger, Love, Disgust-revulsion, Triumph.
But, gosh. Quit complaining and get out and DO...
I made it challenging and easy at the same time. Whaddaya want?
I'm interested in doing a short for this contest, but I think it would help if the genre was left open and it just being a theme. Just a thought to help.
So do one. Just what does the genre lock you out of? Even COMEDY can have DRAMA.
DRAMA can be so flexible you could almost consider it "open".
Do something.
Maybe we should revise some parts of this contest with antman and Shig...
I don't think so. Most of the other venues require you to sign up before you know what the topic/theme/subject is going to be. Then it's announced and you either produce or go up on "the wall of shame".
This one, we get to sit and wait and see if the announced subject suits our whims, then whine, complain, ask for changes, and even wonder about revision.
The one thing I felt was the biggest impediment was the short time to produce (and some venues give only 48 hours or so), I mentioned it once and was told that was part of the challenge.
OK...I accept the challenge. Do 'em when I can, offer to help with as objective judging as I can if I can't.
This thing will work if the people here will accept the challenge and jump in. Letting the winner select the next "go" is actually fun. I had a great idea for "Power Outage" and my actors couldn't meet the time element (we're gonna do it anyway, take our time, and see how well we can do it). "Aliens", I had an idea but a family member undergoing serious surgery took my attention.
But the challenge is there, we can make it work, if we just will.
The only thing that needs changing at this time is attitude.
And don't forget a 'Daily Planner' you used for the ticket book. :)

What REALLY would have enticed me to this particular theme was scrapping the "comedy" of it. I've been thinking about doing a cop short for a while, but it was to be a drama...
Next time, why not give us the theme (cop film/serial killer/etc...) or just a genre (Action/Comedy/Thriller...)...
MikePizzoff
2010 May 10th, 12:43
Personally, I think the idea of having a theme AND genre to follow is great. Otherwise, every contest you may end up with someone who always does the same sort of movie each time. Plus it helps for those people who are having writers block and would otherwise not be able to think up an idea on their own.
Also, more importantly, I would have definitely been in this contest. However, as I had said before, there was no deadline date posted. When I first read the thread I thought the contest was ending the following day, a Sunday. Came back to check on it the next Thursday, I believe, and found out it was actually ending THAT Sunday, which was too late for me to get something together.
In short - I think the only thing that should be changed in this contest is posting a set-in-stone deadline each time.

You've essentially got it. For all practical purposes you can almost ignore the "DRAMA" genre. All in life is pretty much DRAMA of some sort or other.
Go with something you can work with.

Depending on what the next theme IS, I may be participating in it. Seeing as you're (Bif) the only one who's entered, I'm guessing (going by the trend of previous contests) you get to choose the next theme...
Done! Go here http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?p=320120#post320120 to see what we're in for.
Deadline: Sunday May 23rd 6PM Eastern.
And don't forget a 'Daily Planner' you used for the ticket book. :)
You noticed that...Good "catch"...
...Dangit...."Busted"....
We do use what we have...
