I've attached a Sony Handycam gun microphone, specifically this one http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665847556 , the ECM-CG1 and it isn't working with my HV30.

Is the microphone just not compatible at all or is there something that needs to be changed in the settings? When I plug it into the mic jack the audio levels just drop completely to nothing. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi tarheel, and welcome to the forum!

I'm not certain about that particular mic (the specs on the page you linked don't say), but many Sony camcorders provide so-called "plug-in power (http://www.transom.org/tools/faqs/faq.mics.html#pluginpower)" at the mic jack, while to my knowledge no Canons ever have.

no Canons ever have

Strangely enough, the T2i powers a lav I have; I accidentally plugged it in without the battery box, and it worked!
