Wanted some feedback on my current backup solution for HD video files.
I backup the Canon HD Vixia 32GIG internal flash to my external 500GB Western Digital Passport drive, then flush the camera. To insure my files are truly safe (from fire, flood, theft), I backup the external WD drive files to Mozy Online Backup for $5/month. They offer unlimited storage backup. Aside from the risk of Mozy going out of business and true armegeddon, is this a bright idea? Or is my flank still open to data loss. Many thanks in advance. :hv20-smilie70:

What's gonna happen with your data if you decide to quit Mozy?

I have no plans to quit Mozy, but if I did or switched to Carbonite, etc, I would back-up to the new provider before I quit Mozy. All in all, does this seem like a good backup method?

I don't know. I think it is rather time consuming. I like to have quick access to my files (our DSL is anything else than fast).
My weapon choice would be a BD back-up did I shoot tape-less.

I was thinking about this too but just couldn't see myself uploading gigs and gigs all the time. Some ISPs would even shut you down for using an "unreasonable" amount of bandwidth. Usually that's just the stupid cable companies more than DSL.
Also, unlimited doesn't mean unlimited. Same thing with them, read the fine print as it might say "unlimited does not mean unreasonable amount". Makes a lot of sense right? Sadly, most of those sites say exactly that as I found out when researching them a few weeks ago.
As cgbier said...quick access is not an option but the point of it is not quickness but a safe backup solutions. I decided to just build a RAID NAS and back it up to that so it's at least somewhat safe. They also sell fireproof/flood proof NAS backup units. They are expensive but after a few years of paying that $5...it'll pay for its self (okay after doing the math..like 20 years, lol). Weigh those options!

I don't know how different BD is, but conventional optical media is not proving to be 100% reliable. I know one photographer personally who has found out image files on some of his disks were "no longer there". He advises "refreshing" material on optical disk every year or two (by copying to a hard drive then burning to a fresh disk).
My method is to maintain archive files on two external hard drives that I do not leave powered up except when I need to put files on them or retrieve files from them. They are not left on and "spinning" except when needed. When they hit 75% - 80% capacity, I'll go out and buy another pair.
