Hi, first post - utter plank.
I recently shot some footage in HDV cine mode (PF25) and am trying to capture the footage in Final Cut Pro 5.
When i go to log and capture Final Cut crashes. Why is this happening? IS it to do with my capture settings? sequence settings? What should both be? At the moment capture settings are.
Capture Preset - HDV
Device Control Preset - HDV Firewire
and sequence settings are
Sequence Preset - HDV - 1080i50
And I am also using the standard 4 - 6 firewire that came with the camera, do i need a special type of HDV firewire?
I have also tried capturing through imovie and that works although it flashes a bright green every so often.
any pointers would be great.

We're both novices on the same day. Trying to get my new HV20 to connect with FCP and getting message that it can't log and capture (unable to detect device). I'm looking around to see what I find and like you, the issue is likely in all these various settings.
My question for the group is this: if I capture in HD but intend to download and edit as SD footage, wouldn't my settings remain the same as they did for my previous SD footage?

I assume you are using a PAL camera.
I can only comment on FCP 5.1.4, so I hope you have all the updates.
Capture/sequence settings are correct, so I assume that the problem is in camera/on tape. A few things you can check:
1. Make sure there is timecode on the tape and that it's in 'HDV' and NOT 'DV' format (this can confuse FCP; not sure if iMovie just ignores it)
2. Make sure your camera is set for 'HDV'/'DV' output: if the tape is in HDV but the camera is set to 'DV' output, again FCP will not recognize it.
Lastly, I have to ask: what do you mean 'the standard firewire (cable) that came with the camera' ? The HV20 ships with a USB cable, NOT a firewire.
Let us know if you succeed, this seems to be a common question around

Wolferic,
I have a similar problem in the US (except with 1080i60). I had the 'easy setup' the same as above, i checked for being in HDV/DV output. I don't know how to check the tape for the presence of a timecode, but I assume it is ok, if I can film in DV mode and cap it into fcp...
In the end, fcp is just not seeing the camera when I switch it from DV to HDV mode...

hi - I've had similar problem. I've just discovered an easy setup called something like 'HDV 1080i50 firewire basic'. I selected this from the 'FINAL CUT PRO' menu on the top left hand side of the screen. Now I can import HDV 50i no problem.
I'm hoping to find a preset sequence setting to match that won't require rendering. I mention this because before getting FCP log and capture to work I used imovieHD to capture and imported the .MOV into FCP. However, there's something very wrong with this process as when I play back in imovieHD, the audio is slow. When I import into FCP the audio plays at the correct speed, but is advanced by about 1 second! Finally laying a clip down onto the timeline requires rendering and I couldn't find a sequence setting to resolve this.
Hope this helps...

some problem occured to final cut users when upgrading software from FCP 5.0 to FCP 5.1 (minimum required to use HDV in good conditions).
In this case, trash FCP user pref file and try to reload settings manually instead of using presets (easy configs).
If you updated to latest Final Cut, and still got the crash, launch Console.app and watch the"crash message" into Final Cut Pro Crash reporter and system.log
The bad file to delete should appear.
Also not that some user had problems with user registration : in that case, the Apple File dedicated to user registration is corrupted. You should uninstall FCP and re-install it from scratch with your license ready to be enetered again.
