What's wrong with my footage?

I'm new to the HV20, and new to HD...I took some footage (using HDV setting)of my daughter chasing a balloon. I imported into Final Cut Express HD using a 1080i60 (AIC) timeline. I then saved as a Quicktime Movie. But the image looks strange and pixilated on movement (is this motion blur?). Is this normal? Did I do something wrong when recording? Or am i using a wrong setting? I thought 1080 was better for motion? My daughter is moving in this clip, and the lighting isn't top notch, but it should be better than this. Any help is appreciated. The footage looks great when I plug it into my HDTV via HDMI. I tried imported via iMovie and got the same results. The image is pretty aweful!

Also, I shot in HDV (not 24p), as I thought I wouldn't have to do any manipulating the footage that way...is this the problem?

Ok, I'm doing some more research. I'm wondering if my problem is an "interlacing" problem. This seems to be the effect I'm seeing.

I thought you only had to "de-interlace" footage with the HV20 taken in the 24p mode? So do I have to figure out some conversion for any footage taken ?

I downloaded it, can't play it in VLC (only get sound) and quicktime hangs :(

If you are getting blocks then the bitrate is too low, either reduce the dimensions or increase the bitrate when encoding.

If you are getting horizontal lines where there is motion, then you need to de-interlace the footage, I don't use your editing program, but it should be a project setting or something you can do on export.

Can't play it either. tried loading into Vegas, but only the sound appears.

I downloaded VLC, and can't play it either...
but it plays fine in Quicktime (but I'm on a mac)

Sorry, I'm sure it's an interlacing issue; although I'm not sure how to correct that. I don't want to have to convert footage everytime I do something.

Hi Sbruce,

I also downloaded and tried to play this file but failed. I opened it in GSpot and on the PC it reports the codec as ICOD (Unknown). The codec is actually the "Apple Intermediate Codec" for HD. I haven't used final cut express but when you export your movie you should choose a different codec if you want to share files across Mac and PC. On the PC I have used Premiere 2 and MPEGPro HD to export raw mt2 files back to HDD.

In the VLC player there is an option to de-interlace the footage on the fly. I have found the blend option to work well.

I read on google (I am on a PC and use Vegas) that you can add a deinterlace filter to the footage?

Your complaint is definitely about visible interlacing.

If you upgraded to QuickTime Pro, there is a way to deinterlace on-the-fly while playing:

1) Open the file with QuickTime Player.
2) Select from the menu Windows->Show Movie Properties (cmd-J).
3) Select "Video Track" from the list.
4) Select the "Visual Settings" tab (in the middle of the window).
5) Check the "Deinterlace" checkbox.

If you now save the movie again, the "Deinterlace" property will be saved as checked. QuickTime will deinterlace on the fly when playing. It will not alter the video footage.
