DM-50 microphone problem, help!

Tried to use my HV20 with the DM-50 tonight and it malfunctioned. The sound was distorted and intermittent, pulsing. The screen displayed a flashing "S" symbol along with a flashing "internal mike off" symbol. Any suggestions on where to look for the cause? Thanks

An update. I contacted Canon directly and they suggested that I try the DM50 mic on another camera to determine if its a camera or mic problem. Since I don't have the luxury of two HV cameras, I was wondering if there was anyone from the Minneapolis area on this forum? I would like to try my DM-50 on their camera to determine what device is faulty.
