This was my first shoot with the 7d. My wife used the HV30 but the matching was just too difficult in post to use the footage from the HV30 (need to work on this because I really need to use both camera's).

I modified a shrigg rig with D-focus for shoulder mounting the 7d. DIY dolly and pvc track (still bumpy..will be upgrading to galvanized track soon). Most shots were hand held though.

Please take a look and let us know what you think as we continue to improve. Much appreciated.

Really nice.
I think it would be quite interesting if you could show us a picture of the modified shrigg rig to mount the 7d. Also, what is the main problem you encounter when trying to match footage of the 7d with the hv20? Colour? DOF due to smaller sensor? I think of this like trying to match footage shot with a DOF adapter with the one shot without.

Thanks. I'll try to remember to take a photo of the set up tonight.
The main problem between the HV30 and the 7d matching was color (didn't white balance the hv30 prior to shooting so that might have been a problem) and detail. I'm assuming it is due to the smaller sensor (like you mentioned).

lovely! you surely can match them up.
a little boost in saturation and contrast on the hv20 footage matches the 5D/7D quite nicely when deep DOF is handy. 'unsharp mask' adds perceived sharpness when needed to mix them up without too much difference.

Quite nice. You've captured some very good shots/moments. My only concerns are 1. don't get too carried away with shallow DOF and 2. be careful about using copyrighted songs. I'm bad about both of those myself, so those aren't really criticisms :)

Very nice work. And I feel your pain on trying to match HV footage to the 5d/7d. It's just so hard.

Here is the photo of the modified Shrigg Rig. It worked really well Offset the shoulder mount to see the screen better (I shoot left handed). Utilized a 12" and 24" CF rod and FF (d-focus). I am going to be mounting a quick release soon.

I C: I've definitely toned down the depth of field since the first shoot. It was so hard to not do it where everything looked so clean (and since I was previously using my HV30 w/jag35). I try to look at the whole scene with different f-stops to deepen. Regarding the Music. I have done quite a bit of research lately...and hopefully I will be utilizing better avenues for the music. I guess there are more options than I previously knew about. I'm having a discussion on another forum (http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=9558) regarding this topic and what alternaive options we have for utilizing legal music for these videos.

rhervag: Thanks for the compliment and especially for the advice on how to get the Hv30 and the 7d to work together. In which program is 'unsharp mask'. I use primarily premiere cs3 and after effects.

well i use VEGAS and it is a plugin inside it. it is also available in photoshop and pretty standard stuff so i'm sure it is also in either Premiere or AfterEffects.
It allows to increase local contrast ('accutance') which really acts as a sharpening process improving perceived resolution by making things pop and get better outlines.
some background info for the right settings : http://www.scantips.com/simple6.html and http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/unsharp-mask.htm & http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/techniques/local-contrast-enhancement.htm

here is an example of 5D + HV20 footage mixed up with such method at times it's hard to tell which is which : http://vimeo.com/6046736 (edit: sorry for the embed i can't seem to make it a simple link without hijacking the thread)

I would imagine you'll have to figure out something regarding mixing the footage, because this little video won't be adequate to put on the DVD.

You going to post the ceremony footage? It'll be interesting seeing that, I bet syncing will be a bitch with that little rice machine.

rhervag,

You are not thread jacking at all. I like this kind of discussion (and I'm a visual type of guy). Anyhow, I couldn't really tell which camera was used from shot to shot (except for the close ups with shallower DOF). Very nice work and thanks for the links. I'll definitely try using this soon (and I did find it in the effects for premiere - same name).

blondandfun,

This Wedding Video was for practice only and there was no wedding service. No one was biting at offers for doing wedding highlight videos because I couldn't give them examples of my work (at least that involved a wedding like scenario). Therefore, we put this together to give potential clients an idea of the quality and type of video we could put together. When we do get to do a wedding, I will definitely be including ceremony and reception footage. Hopefully by then I will have enough practice, utilizing suggestions from here, to match the HV30 and the 7d. I can't afford another 7d yet! ;)

So that girl isn't married yet :D?

And did blond and fun mean that this little video isn't adequate for DVD because of the length? Seems like there is a trend now for the full wedding package to include lots of these little highlights or save the date vids, etc, in conjunction (I imagine) with longer amounts of footage on DVD. But this just a test anyhow...nice work though!

Yes, she unfortunately is, hehe. But not to the guy in the video....they are just friends.

Regarding the package DVD. I'm trying to stick with primarily doing highlight videos.....I just can't figure out how you can fit the full ceremony on a DVD...?

Any wedding DVD is a collection of highlights. You have to compress a whole day into 90-120 minutes.

For your portfolio you need to get shots from an actual ceremony (get your buddy in the vid married ;) ). Clients like to see samples of ring exchange, first kiss, ...

Very good. Easily one of the best wedding video I've seen here. Shots and transitions were thoughtful, and it felt big. Nice job dude.

btw, is that the lens you used in the above video? isn't that the 28-135 f5.6? We have that lens, but I never use it. Well, barely ever use it. What do you think about it?

EDIT:
Oh OK, but viewing video on a 6" screen is worthless... IMO, you should at least put it on DVD for them:)

I didn't read early you said no "service" OK I understand they were on a budget OK. Good job.
